In many cases suspended solids or color had to be removed. Since our products already did that work at the raw water treatment plants, it was naturally to let the coagulants take a part in the wastewater treatment as well. Phosphorus and nitrogen sometimes need to be separated from industrial wastewater. In many cases only one of the two is regulated, in quite a few cases neither.
As long as there has been a demand for phosphorus removal, our products have been a part of that water treatment application. We made our first tailor-made product for this purpose as early as the late 1960s. Since then we have developed and broadened our product portfolio by adding a number of aluminium and iron-based coagulants. We offer products for removal of phosphorus before, during or after the biological treatment. If no biological treatment exists, we can offer products for this purpose too.
In many cases our products are not only used for phosphorus removal. For instance, at many customer plants our coagulants are not only used to remove phosphorus, but also odour. To further improve the multi-purpose properties of our products, inorganic coagulants can be combined with our organic coagulants or flocculants (commonly known as polymers).
Our products can remove particle-bound nitrogen. They can also be used to unload the biological nitrogen removal process. We also offer carbon sources for the denitrification process in many regions. Our products support the operation of a reliable and compact nitrogen removal process.
Sludge treatment and disposal of industrial wastewater sludge can be very costly. It is therefore of importance that sludge volumes are kept at a minimum. A high dry solids content reduces the sludge disposal cost.
We provide products for sludge dewatering. We have a great variety of polymers designed for sludge dewatering to achieve optimal process results. In some cases our iron-based coagulants can also be beneficial in this process. A combination of a polymer and a coagulant normally gives improved dewatering properties. This is especially valid for biological sludges with low fibre content. In many cases, the combined use of our coagulants and flocculants also leads to reduced emissions of hydrogen sulphide and ammonia.

Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) are two different ways to measure how much oxygen the water will consume when it enters the recipient. In both cases the oxygen-consuming substances are mainly of organic origin. These substances should be reduced to a minimum in the wastewater treatment plant. Industries normally focus more on COD and municipalities on BOD removal.
With chemical treatment, removal of COD is improved at basically all kinds of industrial wastewater plants. The more particle-bound COD, the more efficient the removal rate. Our products can separate some dissolved substances as well, but when the COD consists of small organic molecules a biological treatment process is normally preferred.
If our products are used before the secondary treatment, the biological process will work more efficiently and consume less energy. Or if needed, the plant capacity can be increased without any major investments. A wastewater treatment plant using chemicals to support BOD/COD removal will always be the most compact plant and leave the smallest possible environmental footprint.
Most industrial wastewater consists of both particle-bound and dissolved impurities. The particles are normally called suspended solids (SS). Local conditions determine the SS content and how much of the impurities that are solid.
The SS particles vary in size, and the smaller they are the more difficult they are to separate. Our coagulants and flocculants agglomerate particles. This means that smaller particles combine with larger ones and are easier to separate in a sedimentation tank or a filter. We can provide products or product combinations for basically any situation where it is necessary to remove particles from wastewater.
By removing particles before the biological treatment process (if such a process is used), the load on the secondary treatment is decreased. Since particle-bound BOD is harder to degrade than dissolved, the savings in capacity volume and energy consumption are even better than those achieved by improving SS removal alone.
By utilizing our products and knowledge in SS removal and biological treatment processes, we can guarantee to come up with a proposal that reduces emissions of greenhouse gases from a wastewater treatment plant.
In industrial applications, colored wastewater can be a serious issue and a great challenge. Depending on the origin of the color, different technologies are used for removal.
We have a broad selection of products that can remove color from waste. In some cases the color is precipitated, in others it is adsorbed and in others the color is degraded. Depending on geographic region, we can offer different products and solutions for color removal from industrial wastewater.
We have a variety of other products to offer industrial wastewater treatment plants. Defoamers, antiscalants, oxidation agents, pH adjusting products and activated carbon are a few examples. We can offer most of them on a global basis.
Some of our products are also used to remove pollutants that may not normally
be considered as a priority for a wastewater treatment plant to deal with.
Sulphide precipitated by iron salts is the most commonly known odour compound in wastewater treatment plants. Sulphide is very toxic and also causes severe corrosion to equipment and concrete. Sulphide is produced by bacteria under septic conditions.
Our iron products can be used for removing sulphides from wastewater, thickeners and sludge treatment facilities. When used in sludge treatment processes the ammonia level can also be reduced, improving the working environment even further. Many of our products also affect the septic conditions so the formation rate of sulphide is reduced.
We can also offer a complete solution for odour and corrosion control – Kemira H2S-Guard – which was launched in 2008.
Our products are commonly used for precipitation of heavy metals in industrial wastewater. We can remove both particle-bound and dissolved heavy metals. By combining our coagulants and flocculants the treatment becomes efficient and the treatment plant can be made more compact.
We also offer products that can be used for reduction or oxidation of metal ions to make them easier to separate. For some selected heavy metals we are also able to offer adsorbants as an alternative treatment method.
Industrial wastewater can often have an imbalanced composition for biological treatment. In most cases there is a lack of one or more nutrients. Normally there is a lack of phosphorus or nitrogen, but other micro-nutrients may also be missing. Our experts can find out what is missing and offer a solution suitable for the problem.
