AutoChem - Process Development and Scale-Up

Process Development in the chemical industry requires a profound and comprehensive knowledge of the processes involved and is governed by a triangular relationship between `Economy - Safety - Environment`.

To design the process right the first time, the thermodynamics and kinetics of the entire chemical reaction must be understood completely, together with detailed knowledge of the physical behavior and mass-transfer characteristics of the system.

By using Automated Lab Reactors and in situ techniques, such as in situ FTIR spectroscopy and particle size characterization, the conditions of a process can be accurately controlled and measured. For a successful transfer into large-scale production, more advanced knowledge can be obtained from Process Analytical Technology (PAT) and Automated Lab Reactors with calorimetric capabilities.

Process Analytical Technology (PAT) is being implemented throughout the chemical and pharmaceutical industries at an increasing rate. During the development phase, Process Analytical Technology (PAT) tools such as in situ FTIR, FBRM, or RTCal, support the design of safe and robust procedures that build quality into the commercial process. This allows process consistency, batch repeatability, and elimination of failures at the manufacturing scale.
