On March 26, 2012, the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) issued a revised final rule for the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) 1910.1200. The final rule, HazCom 2012, became effective May 25, 2012. The HCS was revised to align with the United Nations` Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).

The first important compliance date is December 1, 2013. OSHA is requiring that all employers train their workers on the new labeling elements as well as the new SDS format by this date (no later).
The goal of OSHA's alignment with the GHS is to provide a common, coherent approach to classifying and communicating chemical hazards, but the biggest task facing employers is how to train their workforce in this new chemical hazard communication system.
