  • Moisture Monitoring for SF6 / Air Circuit Breakers

    SF6 (sulphur hexafluoride ) or air is used as an insulation gas in circuit breakers . Excess moisture in these gases causes arcing, which can trip the circuit breaker and cut off power to the distribution network.   • Airport Environmental Monitoring

    Water pollution from airport run-off is increasingly coming under public and government scrutiny. As environmental regulations tighten, the ability to monitor for aviation fuel contamination from runway run-off has become essential.

    Monitoring sites at airports can be extremely challenging often with no power or telephone lines available and with limited access for maintenance. Chelsea’s robust UviLux Hydrocarbon Sensor with its low power consumption and high accuracy is ideally suited for this application. Installed at various locations around the airport, deployed with it’s own integrated anti-biofouling system, utilising the GSM network, the monitoring sites send data to a secure ftp site, where any internet enabled device can access the data. In this way the systems act as any early warning system allowing any hydrocarbon discharge to be detected in real-time.

    Optional environmental monitoring features include remote control to allow the user to turn equipment on and off, change the sample rate and detection range. There is also a facility to allow SMS text and email alarm notifications triggered by user-defined set-points together with customised web pages, data displays and automated data downloads via an ftp server.

    Airport runoff can contain high concentrations of various pollutants, in particular polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), the environmental levels of which have to be monitored. An understanding of the magnitude of contamination due to airport runoff water is important for the effective management of airport infrastructure. Chelsea’s robust UviLux Hydrocarbon Sensor with its low power consumption and high accuracy is ideally suited to the airport environment.

  • Prescribed Burning

    A general understanding of the separate and combined effects of several weather elements on fire behavior is needed to plan and execute a good prescribed burn. Because weather and fuel factors interact, an experienced prescribed burner can conduct a successful burn even with one or more factors slightly outside the desired range—as long as they are offset by other factors. Accurate fire weather monitoring of fire danger indices via the RAWS network, providing historical data leading up to a prescribed burn is critical in the planning stages. However, having accurate weather conditions in a micro-climate scale in real time during the execution of a prescribed burn is just as critical. The weather variables most applicable to prescription burns are air temperature, relative humidity, wind direction, wind speed and precipitation. A combination of wind speed, relative humidity, temperature, and solar insulation largely determines fuel condition which in turn affects fire behavior.

  • Radionuclide Monitoring for Nuclear Power Plants

    The continuing establishment of nuclear power stations around the world pose unique environmental challenges for their operators. Ecotech provides air samplers to nuclear power plants for sampling of radionuclides. A nuclear power plant`s radionuclide monitoring network enables continuous sampling of airborne particles onto sample filters contained within High Volume Air Samplers. These filters are then analysed in a laboratory in order to screen for any radiation releases. The challenge has always been to obtain a sufficiently large volume through the filter in order to exceed the laboratory methods minimum detection limits. Ecotech`s MegaVol Sampler, samples at a flow rate of between 120-150 m3/hr providing a high flow rate in order to collect a sufficient sample mass for laboratory analysis. The MegaVol will maintain volumetric flow rate at a preset volume until the filter is either changed or overloaded. The MegaVol can be equipped with a 3G modem in order to remotely monitor flow rate and other diagnostic parameters such as temperature, pressure and wind speed and direction.
