Algae control

by Geomembrane Technologies Inc. (GTI)     based in Fredericton, NEW BRUNSWICK (CANADA)

Excessive algae growth can throw even the best water treatment processes out of balance. Algae can clog intake screens, fluctuate pH levels, increase chlorine demand, and negatively affect the taste and smell of water. By blocking sunlight within water treatment tanks, you can stop algae growth, reduce chemical usage, and minimize the formation of disinfectant by-products (DBPs). Temperature is better controlled and maintenance associated with algae cleaning is simplified. The results? Better water treatment and lower operating costs.

algae control in drinking water plants

by LG Sonic     based in Zoetermeer, NETHERLANDS

By controlling algae, cyanobacteria and fouling LG Sonic can efficiently reduce taste and odor problems in a treatment plant. The performance of a drinking water treatment plant is consistent with the amount ol contamination in the water. Growth of algae and other fouling in and before a treatment plant can cause various problems within the process. In general, these issues are related with taste or odor of the water. Growth of algae, cyanobacteria and bacteria within the basins of the plant itself, increase the demand of chemicals or filtration and in turn creating problems with THM (trihalomethane) formation. Other common issues are growth of toxin and geosmin producing cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) within the intake reservoir or dam. These molecules give the water an unpleasant `earthy ` taste.

The LG Sonic technology controls suspended and filamentous algae without killing beneficial bacteria in (Waste)Water treatment plants.

Cooling Tower, algae and biofilm control

by LG Sonic     based in Zoetermeer, NETHERLANDS

“Efficiently lowers algae, biofilm formation, bacterial counts and chemical consumption.” When temperatures are high, for example in cooling towers, a matrix of different microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, EPS and algae can grow very rapidly. The disadvantages of biofilm formation in cooling towers can be enormous. Therefore water used in cooling towers needs frequent treatment and chemical shocks to keep levels of micro-organisms to a minimum.

Algae monitoring of drinking water reservoir -

by microLAN On-line Biomonitoring Systems     based in Waalwijk, NETHERLANDS

Due to green algae problems in the water reservoir of a drinking water treatment plant, the ALGcontrol was installed to continuously monitor the algae concentrations and possible toxic blue green algae blooms. During almost 4 months the ALGcontrol measured the total chlorophyll and cyano chlorophyll concentrations of the water reservoir. In order to be able to compare these results, second off-line controls were carried out using the ISO 10260 chlorophyll-a quantification (extraction into ethanol, spectrophotometric detection at 665 and 750 nm). The results of the off-line standard lab method show a good correlation with the measurements of the ALGcontrol. The good correlation can be verified as well at high as at low concentrations of total chlorophyll.

Bioaqua

by Atlas Seis - Sistemas de Energia para a Industria e Serviços, Lda.     based in S.Domingos de Rana, PORTUGAL

BIOAQUA is a microbiological product base on a mixture of selectively adapted bacteria, which accelerates the decomposition of organic matter, the degradation of wastes, consumes excessive nutrients and sediments at the bottom of lakes. BIOAQUA prevents and controls excess algae or an algae bloom at Municipal lakes or public fountains. BIOAQUA acts as a highly efficient probiotic that competes with a wide range of aquatic pathogenic and diseases. BIOAQUA prevents and diminishes the eutrophication effect by competing, for food, with algae that receive nutrition form fish waste, over feeding fish, decaying organic matter (leaves & plants), lawn fertilizers.

Environmental Monitoring - Water Screening for Pollutants - Pesticide Screening

by Biosensor     based in Formello, ITALY

Water screening for the detection of pollutants owning to large classes of chemical compounds such as triazine, fenylurea, diazine and phenolic pesticides can be performed. The presence of environmental pollutants can be determined utilizing biological materials such as photosynthetic biomediators (Plants, Algae, Cyanobacteria) and enzymes (e.g. Laccase or Tyrosinase). AMPBIO-ITO Light provides amperometric measurements performed on electro-active biological material suspended, deposited or grown on an Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) electrode, before and after the injection of the analyte under test. OPTICBIO-Multicell Survival optical is based on multicell arrays for biological material survival/storage and fluorescence measurement for the control of the physiological activity.

DOCUPAK LLC REDUCES COOLING TOWER CHEMICAL USAGE BY A THIRD

by Scalewatcher North America Inc.     based in Oxford, PENNSYLVANIA (USA)

Docupak LLC, a full service marketing company headquartered in Alabaster, Alabama, has reduced chemical usage by a third and removed all scale from its cooling tower at its plant after installing the patented, award-winning Scalewatcher computerized, electronic water-conditioner from Scalewatcher North America. In addition there are no longer signs of algae growth on the cooling tower louvres. Founded in 1998, Docupak, the operating name of Document and Packaging Brokers Inc., develops and distributes materials for businesses nationwide. In addition to its headquarters in Alabaster, Alabama, the company also operates a further plant in Alexandria, VA and has sales offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Los Angeles, Tampa and Washington, D.C. Aware that health agencies continually draw attention to the risks of limescale and algae in cooling towers and wanting to reduce the use of chemicals in the cooling tower, Plant Manager, Anthony Kinstley decided to install the Scalewatcher electornic water-conditioner through local dealer, Al Chatham of Water Processing and Well Supply in Harpersville, Alabama. An industrial Scalewatcher was installed on to the water-feed line to the building and then a further unit was specifically fitted on to the recirculation line of the cooling tower. “Since using the system the scaling on our cooling tower has been eliminated and we currently use only a third of the original chemicals intended for the water treatment within our system”, said Anthony Kinstley. Many air conditioning and refrigeration plant systems are water-cooled. The heat generated by cooling coils is removed by water, which is passed through a water-cooling tower. These are recirculating systems, which operate at temperatures ideal for bacterial and algae growth, and have plentiful supplies of nutrients. In cooling towers, temperature, water hardness, pH, scale and corrosion are all factors, which increase the chance of biofilms, algae and Legionella colonization. The environmentally friendly Scalewatcher provides a permanent solution to hard water problems without the need of chemicals, salt or maintenance. It works by producing a varying electronically applied force field, induced by a coil wrapped around the outside of the pipework, which keeps the minerals in suspension and thus prevents limescale forming. The water’s increased solubility enables it to dissolve existing scale, which is gradually washed away. “Scalewatcher has proven itself to be highly effective. I would highly recommend this product and service without limitation,” concluded Antony Kinstley. Scalewatcher models are based on continuous research and over 25 years experience and expertise as market leaders in electronic scale control with countless units sold worldwide. The patented Scalewatcher systems are capable of treating pipe sizes from one to 120 inches. All Scalewatcher systems come with a full performance guarantee and are shipped throughout North America.
