Laboratory instruments solutions for chemical industry

Converting raw materials into more than 70 000 different products that are used in almost all industries, the chemical industry lies at the core of the global economy and, perhaps, modern civilization. There is hardly any industrially produced good that would exist without the chemical industry, all the more considering that it was not until the 19th century that chemistry, particularly organic chemistry, exploded with Wöhler’s urea synthesis. Within just a few decades, numerous important industrial processes were developed that still shape today’s chemical processes – from the chlor-alkali to the Solvay process, to name just a few. The production of high-tech, high-purity chemicals requires safe and reliable analytical solutions. Find out what we have to offer in this area.

Laboratory instruments solutions for polymer and plastics industry

Synthetic polymers and plastics are a mainstay of modern life. Because of their versatility and physical properties, plastics and polymers have conquered nearly every aspect of human activity: airplanes and cars, packaging of all kinds, medical devices and products, electronics, and countless more – without high-quality and high-tech plastics most products we use today in everyday life would look very different. Polymer production is a demanding process in which high-purity raw materials undergo complex reactions and are turned into polymers, resins, rubbers, and gums. To make sure that the products meet the specifications, the materials and processes have to be monitored along the entire production chain. This makes the use of specific and highly accurate analytical techniques indispensable. We at Metrohm are committed to providing the instrumentation and know-how you need to solve your analytical challenges in polymer analysis.

Measurement of sulphur in oil and fuels for oil & gas industry

There is a continuing and increasing demand for a rapid, simple and cost-effective measurement of sulfur in a wide range of petroleum products including automotive, marine and aviation fuels. Benchtop EDXRF instruments such as the world renown Lab-X3500 and associated X-Supreme8000, can be found in many refinery laboratories/testing houses, with the instrument often operated by production staff on a 24/7 basis, giving accurate results conforming to globally accepted test methods, e.g. ASTM D4294, ISO20847, and the new ISO13032,etc. Both instruments used the analytical technique of Energy-Dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) which is well regarded for its excellent performance, versatility, ease of use, speed, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Measurement solution for fire testing for the railway industry

A lot of research is carried out in laboratory and on real fires as to the gaseous substances produced in fire effluent. Measurement principles using analytical instrumentation are becoming more widely used in fire testing, due to the quick, real-time nature of the measurements. ISO 19702 is an international standard developed for the use of FTIR analysers in the analysis of gas from fire effluents. Further to this, local test standards such as DIN 5510, applicable to the railway industry, can provide further requirements for gases to be measured.

Measurement of acetaldehyde, methanol, & benzene in CO2 applications for gas manufacturers & food & beverage industry

The BevAlert Model 8900 provides direct measurement of Acetaldehyde, Methanol, and Benzene (AMB) in Carbon Dioxide. The instrument is utilized by Specialty Gas Manufacturers and the Food and Beverage Industry to monitor trace impurities in CO2 used in carbonated beverages. The BevAlert Model 8900 employs a photoionization detector (PID). The AMB in the gas sample are physically separated using proprietary GC columns. A dual-column configuration with timed backflush to vent is used to strip off moisture and heavier gases. At sample injection, a fixed volume of sample is carried through the pre-cut column. The backflush is timed so that primarily the AMB and other similar compounds continue on to the analytical column. Contaminants are then backflushed to vent. Acetaldehyde, Methanol, and Benzene are separated from potentially interfering components on the analytical column and elute to the detector for analysis.

Measurement of naphthalene in ambient air to monitor workplace exposure limits & at remediation & Superfund sites

The Series 8900 Naphthalene Analyzer provides direct measurement of Naphthalene in ambient air. This instrument is utilized in industrial plants to monitor workplace exposure limits and at remediation and Superfund sites. The Series 8900 Naphthalene Analyzer employs a photoionization detector (PID) as the sensing element. A dual column configuration with timed backflush to vent is used to strip off moisture and heavier hydrocarbons. A pre-cut column is used in series with the analytical column. At sample injection a fixed volume of sample is carried to the pre-cut column. Backflush is timed so that only the Naphthalene and other similar components are eluted to the analytical column. Contaminants on the pre-cut column are backflushed to vent. Naphthalene is separated from potentially interfering components on the analytical column and elute to the detector for analysis.
