Biofuel Analyzing for the Bioenergy Industry

AppliTek has already developed the necessary tools to measure and control on-line the production, in case the futur is in favour of biofuels. For biodiesel, the following quality indices should be monitored, on order to comply with international legislation on biofuel QC:

Free fatty acids - Calcium & Magnesium - Total Phosphorus - Potassium - Moisture (water content)

  • FT-NIR spectroscopy for the biofuels industry

FT-NIR spectroscopy is a widely used technique that can do rapid and non-destructive measurements in seconds. This technique can achieve multiple analysis results per measurement and determine real–time chemical information at-line and in-line.

  • Evaporators technology for biogas and biofuels industries

Combining industrial performance and sustainable development while remaining competitive requires that the biofuels and biogas industry ensure industrial process safety, reduce operational costs, implement solutions providing significant savings and comply with environmental regulations, which ultimately lead to the public’s acceptance of a site.

  • Production of Biofuels from Microalgae

Production of biofuels from certain microalgae and cyanobacteria would appear to be the most promising alternative to current methods, since its yield is very high, sustainable, uses either wastewater, brackish or seawater, does not require the use of agricultural land, does not compete with human food and the cultivation process consumes the CO2noxious gas.

ALGAENERGY is responsibly paving the way towards making microalgal-based biofuels industrially profitable.  The R&D projects assigned to this task include work on selection and genetic engineering of different microalgae to produce substantial lipid-carriers, some of them patented, as well as the establishment of a suitable and scalable production process.

Measurement of oil content of oil bearing algae used for biofuel production

We assist the rapidly growing global biofuels industry through our MQC analysers, speeding up analyses by up to 250 times, and dispensing with the need for hazardous solvents and skilled operators required for traditional methods such as soxhlet extraction and chromatography. Benchtop, non-destructive single seed analysers enable seed breeders to select the highest oil bearing single seeds, accelerating the breeding of high oil bearing seeds for biofuel purposes by up to five years. Typical seeds are Jatropha and Camelina; our breadth of applications capability allows almost all seeds to be characterised. Benchtop seed analysers allow seed co-operatives and biofuel crushers/processors rapidly and accurately to measure the oil and moisture content of biofuel seeds. This enables farmers to be paid according to oil content, and crushing/oil processing to be optimised for the oil and moisture content to achieve the highest quality biofuel output.

Measurement of methane, methanol and ethanol for the biomass monitoring for biofuels.

The Series 8900 provides direct measurement of methane, methanol, and ethanol for the biofuel industry. The Series 8900 GC employs a flame ionization detector (FID). The methane, methanol, and ethanol in the gas sample are physically separated using proprietary GC columns. A dual-column configuration with timed backflush to vent is used to strip off moisture and heavier gases. At sample injection, a fixed volume of sample is carried through the pre-cut column. The backflush is timed so that primarily the MME and other similar compounds continue on to the analytical column. Contaminants are then backflushed to vent. Methane, methanol, and ethanol are separated from potentially interfering components on the analytical column and elute to the detector for analysis.

Dosing pumps for anaerobic disgestion and biogas industry

Biogas is a natural gas also known as biofuel or biomass and is produced by breaking down organic material such as household waste, manure and crops grown specifically for biofuel with temperature-sensitive microbes and capturing the by-products.

  • Process design & engineering services for bio-energy industry

Bio-fuel: A Bio-fuel is a fuel that contains energy from geologically recent carbon fixation. These fuels are produced from living organisms. Bio-fuels are made by a biomass conversion from a wide range of natural and organic resources which includes solid biomass, liquid fuel and biogases. Bio-fuels have increased in popularity because of rising oil prices and the need for energy security. The two main bio-fuels are ethanol and bio-diesel; both type of fuel causes less pollution as compared to conventional diesel- powered engines and have the same performance as a regular diesel fuel.
