biofuel production Applications

  • Production of Biofuels from Microalgae

Production of biofuels from certain microalgae and cyanobacteria would appear to be the most promising alternative to current methods, since its yield is very high, sustainable, uses either wastewater, brackish or seawater, does not require the use of agricultural land, does not compete with human food and the cultivation process consumes the CO2noxious gas.

ALGAENERGY is responsibly paving the way towards making microalgal-based biofuels industrially profitable.  The R&D projects assigned to this task include work on selection and genetic engineering of different microalgae to produce substantial lipid-carriers, some of them patented, as well as the establishment of a suitable and scalable production process.

Measurement of oil content of oil bearing algae used for biofuel production

We assist the rapidly growing global biofuels industry through our MQC analysers, speeding up analyses by up to 250 times, and dispensing with the need for hazardous solvents and skilled operators required for traditional methods such as soxhlet extraction and chromatography. Benchtop, non-destructive single seed analysers enable seed breeders to select the highest oil bearing single seeds, accelerating the breeding of high oil bearing seeds for biofuel purposes by up to five years. Typical seeds are Jatropha and Camelina; our breadth of applications capability allows almost all seeds to be characterised. Benchtop seed analysers allow seed co-operatives and biofuel crushers/processors rapidly and accurately to measure the oil and moisture content of biofuel seeds. This enables farmers to be paid according to oil content, and crushing/oil processing to be optimised for the oil and moisture content to achieve the highest quality biofuel output.

Biofuel Analyzing for the Bioenergy Industry

AppliTek has already developed the necessary tools to measure and control on-line the production, in case the futur is in favour of biofuels. For biodiesel, the following quality indices should be monitored, on order to comply with international legislation on biofuel QC:

Free fatty acids - Calcium & Magnesium - Total Phosphorus - Potassium - Moisture (water content)

    Machine condition monitoring for biofuels

    Overview

The use of ethanol as a gasoline additive has increased dramatically over the past few years and will likely continue to increase. For fuel blenders, this means an added challenge to avoid an incorrect blend that could lead to regulatory fines, loss of customer confidence and damage to equipment. A quick on-site analysis with a portable mid-infrared based analyzer, such as the InfraCal 2 Ethanol Blend Analyzer shown in the photo, can help fuel blenders quickly flag out-of-spec product and ensure the final blend meets specifications.

Laboratory instruments solutions for petrochemical and biofuel

Crude oil is a highly complex mixture of hydrocarbons. Through desalting, distillation, and conversion, it is transformed into fractions of higher-quality hydrocarbons such as paraffins, aromatics, naphthenes, and olefins. Different ratios of these so-called PIANO compounds are blended to yield different fuel and lubricant types. Increasingly, fossil fuels are blended with biofuels. Both blending and refining processes are demanding and require precise and reliable analysis. Regardless whether you deal with fossil or biogenic products, we are your specialist when it comes to analyzing them in accordance with international standards.

  • Evidence for claims of sustainability / responsible stewardship

In many land intensive sectors, strict national, regional and global standards and regulations exist guiding how products must be produced. As pressures on land, biodiversity and communities in developing countries become stronger, ever tighter regulations will result. OE can be used to demonstrate compliance with any type of environmental regulation, for example in the areas of biofuels, timber, palm oil, forest protection, and water usage.

  • Gas infusion technology solutions for the CO2 capture with solutions4CO2

S4CO2`s Gas inFusion technology extracts CO2, NO2, and SO2 from flue gas and biogas and efficiently mass transfers high concentrations of the extracted CO2 into water. The technology is highly modular, dissolves separated gases into water in a bubbleless fashion, is energy efficient, and operates at ambient pressures. Uses include proven rapid acceleration of algae growth for third generation biofuels production, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, animal / aqua feed, mineralization and separation into clean commercial CO2.
