Smoke generator device for building envelope, energy studies & air tightness testing

by Concept Smoke Systems     based in Maidenhead, UNITED KINGDOM

The air tightness or leakage rate of a building is the uncontrolled flow of air through holes, gaps and cracks in the fabric of a building, which may not be detectable simply by looking at the outside of the building. Filling a building or void with smoke and pressurising that volume, will result in a visible discharge of smoke from any problem areas. Smoke is the perfect medium for discovering where leaks are and how big they are! Filling a `leaky` building, ductwork, pipes, aircraft or containment area with smoke and ideally adding a small amount of pressure to the area being tested, will result in a visible discharge of smoke and, simply put, the greater the volume of smoke, the bigger the leak.

Sound Insulation solutions for building acoustics

by Brüel & Kjær Sound & Vibration Measurement A/S     based in Nærum, DENMARK

Sound energy does not remain in the room where it is produced, but propagates throughout the building by any available path, intruding into other rooms as noise. Each country has its own standards of sound insulation in buildings, but it is measured in the same way all over the world. The noise levels in the two rooms under investigation are measured and subtracted, and the level difference is corrected for the influence of the reverberation time and background noise level in the receiving room. The measurements and calculations are made in 1/1- or 1/3-octave bands and averaged over a number of positions in the rooms. Finally a single-number index is calculated by averaging over all the frequency bands.

Waste recovery for energy & utilities

by Tetronics (International) Limited     based in Swindon, UNITED KINGDOM

In order to stay competitive and to be seen as being environmentally responsible, energy and utility companies are always looking for alternative routes to generate power. One method of doing this is by leveraging waste to energy incineration plants linked to the processing municipal solid waste. During this incineration process, APC residues, which are a mixture of fly ash, organic pollutants (including dioxins and furans), are generated and are classified as hazardous waste and have a detrimental environmental impact. This fly ash is subject to Air Pollution Control as it is contaminated with extremely high concentrations of heavy metals and toxic compounds like dioxins, linked to cancer and other health problems. Tetronics offers valuable waste recovery plants that can eliminate the hazardous element within the fly ash while generating an inert building aggregate with the remaining material.

Supervision of Photovoltaic Power Plants in Japan

by K&S Ingenieurpartnerschaft Krug & Schram     based in Munich, GERMANY

The team of K&S technical experts perform independent technical inspections of the photovoltaic system and clarifies technical issues. The advisory service begins even before the actual construction of the photovoltaic power plant - in the design and contract review. It is ensured that all the requirements of the building permit of the relevant Japanese authorities are fulfilled and the contract is aligned with the system. Based on the continuous construction and factory acceptance tests of components, possible quality defects from the start can be reduced to an absolute minimum. With the local networks of the Japanese technology institutions such as New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Japan Electrical Safety & Environment Technology Laboratories (JET), Japan Photovoltaic Energy Association (JPEA) and other leading technology institutions, K&S combines a comprehensive local technical advisory service in Japan.

Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) & Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF)

by Advanced Plasma Power (APP)     based in Swindon, UNITED KINGDOM

A full-scale Gasplasma® plant can make its own RDF from MSW/Commercial Waste. The waste is brought directly into a fuel preparation hall at the front of the building. Inside the fuel preparation hall there is industry standard equipment that can recover glass, metals and hard plastics from the wastes for recycling. The remaining waste is then dried and shredded to make a Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) for the Gasplasma® energy from waste process. Clients who already produce RDF may not require a fuel preparation hall. APP can design a plant without this facility, accepting the RDF directly from the client. Secondary Recovered Fuel or Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) is often confused with Refuse Derived Fuel because they are similar in nature. However, SRF is produced to reach a clearly defined standard such as CEN/343 ANAS whereas RDF is not.

Air cleaning system for the K-12 education

by Dynamic Air Quality Solutions     based in Princeton, NEW JERSEY (USA)

The grades are in: a 2006 national report,Greening America’s Schools, concluded that environmentally friendly school buildings lead to lower operating costs, improved test scores, and enhanced student health. The report, produced by Capital E and co-sponsored by The American Institute of Architects (AIA), concluded that environmentally friendly schools save an average of $100,000 each year. The study examined 30 green schools built between 2001 and 2006, and determined that the total financial benefits of green schools are 20 times greater than their initial cost difference. Measurable benefits include energy and water savings, improved student health and higher test scores.

Carbon Dioxide Monitoring for Indoor Air Quality

by Edinburgh Instruments Ltd     based in Livingston, UNITED KINGDOM

Introduction: Accurate control of critical indoor environmental parameters is not only essential for the well-being and comfort of building occupants, but also has a major impact on energy efficiency. A multitude of parameters can affect indoor air quality (IAQ) from gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds to particulates, humidity and bacteria such as legionella. Carbon dioxide is one of the greatest variables affecting indoor environmental quality since it is produced by people occupying the building. Carbon dioxide production is a function of the number, size and activity levels of the people present in the building. Local concentrations can therefore vary dramatically – for example when a meeting room is occupied, or while workers are on lunch or coffee breaks.
