Fire and explosion protection solutions for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry

We protect against explosions in plants that process bulk material. In the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, bulk materials are processed that have specific explosive characteristics. Small dust particles are released from these materials or substances into the air during the course of processing industrial production. With the movement of air, these particles become suspended in the air and can easily reach explosive concentrations. A dangerous explosion can occur when such a dust cloud comes into contact with an effective ignition source. The risk of explosion therefore primarily increases in enclosed areas.

  • DOCUPAK LLC REDUCES COOLING TOWER CHEMICAL USAGE BY A THIRD

Docupak LLC, a full service marketing company headquartered in Alabaster, Alabama, has reduced chemical usage by a third and removed all scale from its cooling tower at its plant after installing the patented, award-winning Scalewatcher computerized, electronic water-conditioner from Scalewatcher North America. In addition there are no longer signs of algae growth on the cooling tower louvres. Founded in 1998, Docupak, the operating name of Document and Packaging Brokers Inc., develops and distributes materials for businesses nationwide. In addition to its headquarters in Alabaster, Alabama, the company also operates a further plant in Alexandria, VA and has sales offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Los Angeles, Tampa and Washington, D.C. Aware that health agencies continually draw attention to the risks of limescale and algae in cooling towers and wanting to reduce the use of chemicals in the cooling tower, Plant Manager, Anthony Kinstley decided to install the Scalewatcher electornic water-conditioner through local dealer, Al Chatham of Water Processing and Well Supply in Harpersville, Alabama. An industrial Scalewatcher was installed on to the water-feed line to the building and then a further unit was specifically fitted on to the recirculation line of the cooling tower. “Since using the system the scaling on our cooling tower has been eliminated and we currently use only a third of the original chemicals intended for the water treatment within our system”, said Anthony Kinstley. Many air conditioning and refrigeration plant systems are water-cooled. The heat generated by cooling coils is removed by water, which is passed through a water-cooling tower. These are recirculating systems, which operate at temperatures ideal for bacterial and algae growth, and have plentiful supplies of nutrients. In cooling towers, temperature, water hardness, pH, scale and corrosion are all factors, which increase the chance of biofilms, algae and Legionella colonization. The environmentally friendly Scalewatcher provides a permanent solution to hard water problems without the need of chemicals, salt or maintenance. It works by producing a varying electronically applied force field, induced by a coil wrapped around the outside of the pipework, which keeps the minerals in suspension and thus prevents limescale forming. The water’s increased solubility enables it to dissolve existing scale, which is gradually washed away. “Scalewatcher has proven itself to be highly effective. I would highly recommend this product and service without limitation,” concluded Antony Kinstley. Scalewatcher models are based on continuous research and over 25 years experience and expertise as market leaders in electronic scale control with countless units sold worldwide. The patented Scalewatcher systems are capable of treating pipe sizes from one to 120 inches. All Scalewatcher systems come with a full performance guarantee and are shipped throughout North America.

Ultraviolet disinfection systems for the liquid sugar areas

With an increasing emphasis on safety, product quality and regulation, the requirement for efficient and effective disinfection of liquid sugar applications has seen many manufactures turn to UV disinfection systems for an effective, non chemical solution. Concentrated sugar syrups have a high osmotic pressure, which prevents micro-organisms from reproducing. However, many micro-organisms still survive in spore form and have the ability to grow and reproduce upon dilution of the sugar syrup solution thus causing discolouration, changes to flavour and, critically, a reduced product shelf-life and increased risk of infection and ill-health. The threat of micro-biological contamination is further increased as manufacturers respond to consumer demands for reductions in chemical additives and preservatives.

Wastewater testing for the water treatment industry

There are strict regulations in place surrounding waste water, which makes it very important to monitor. Even small changes in aquatic ecosystems can have a huge impact in the chemical makeup of water, temperature, etc. By using real time monitoring on water quality, pollutants can be detected and mitigated before they pose a potential threat to these ecosystems and enter the water course. The rugged AP-2000 allows for real time testing of wastewater and helps to minimise risk of any potential fines. It is works to protect the device and allow for other essential parameters to be tested. Because it is portable, it is easy to transport between locations, and you can also save money from onsite visits by getting instant data readouts using telemetry.

  • Gas Detection Solutions for Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) Safety

Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) is a very useful chemical used in a variety of industries. However, HF is highly toxic with potential fatal consequences with exposure to humans, so facilities that make or use HF should exercise great care. Nevertheless, there is always the risk of leaks from process elements such as valves, pump seals and storage vessels. Tanker loading, transporting and unloading operations also provide opportunity for HF releases. Industrial processes that make or use HF typically have arrays of point sensors distributed throughout the unit. However, these sensors are maintenance intensive and have relatively slow response times. In addition, a point sensor will not detect an HF release unless it is located directly in the area of that release. Electrochemical HF sensors also respond to chlorine, ammonia, and sulfur dioxide, resulting in false alarms.

  • Environmental Monitoring

Environmental monitoring is becoming more important every day in local, national and international policies, showing the environmental awareness demanded by society.

This fact gives rise to an increase in the amount of legislation that obliges companies to law enforcement. Thus, the necessity of making more pollutants controls means high analysis expenses to the companies, which need to subcontract this service.

Although applications in this area advance, there is still a clear demand to get new portable and versatile analysis systems for many different application fields such as pollution in environmental or waste waters, monitoring nutrients in agricultural or horticultural water as well as general process control in chemistry industry. Because of the number of enviromental analysis required, there is a need for screening and monitoring measurements of these compounds at contaminated areas.

Traditional monitoring techniques are typically based on laboratory analysis of field-collected samples that require considerable effort and expense, and the sample may change before analysis. Moreover, the equipment currently available is too large and expensive and it cannot be made portable.Alternatively, microfluidic and electrochemical sensor technologies can contribute to the development of new portable monitoring systems, complementing standard analytical methods for different environmental monitoring applications. In this way, the decentralization and integration of all those typical analyses is the paramount importance in order to reduce cost, simplify the analytical process and make more accessible these technologies to end-users. The development of portable, robust, and accurate Lab-on-a-Chip systems to monitor priority compounds such as contaminants, explosives, chemical warfare agents, inorganic and organic ions is a demand of modern society. Portability allows analyses to be carried out outside of the laboratory, minimizing the risk of contaminating the sample and leading to a faster response time at a lower cost.

Thus, MicruX solutions and technologies open the gate to develop portable and esay-handly Lab-on-a-Chip devices in order to improve pollutants in-situ analysis in a very economic and efficient way.
