Several EU directives and national laws in European countries set requirements for continuous monitoring of flue gas emissions at power plants. Further requirements are set on the quality assurance of the installed measurement systems at the plants. The relevant standard in this regard is EN 14181:2004, the quality assurance of automated measuring systems. The standard dictates how to determine that the measurement systems installed for continuous emissions monitoring at a plant operate according to the directives...
The exhaust gas from combustion engines is a complex mixture of gases and particulate matter. The composition of the gas may change rapidly. Multicomponent analysis of exhaust gases can be performed with a Gasmet™ FTIR Gas Analyzer with a response time (T90) of one second. The winning combination is the result using of a small volume gas sample cell, a powerful sample pump and a fast detector with liquid nitrogen cooling. The analyzer, sampling system and computer can be assembled on a cart for use in a...
Oil wells almost always produce natural gas (“associated gas”) along with the petroleum. In many cases, it is uneconomical to process due to heavy contamination. As a consequence, this gas is combusted, “flared” or simply vented as-is during upset conditions in the process. Newly updated EPA regulations like 40 CFR Part 60 Subpart OOOO (also known as Quad O) as well as the new RSR MACT rule for refineries, requires oil & gas companies to report the flare gas emitted to our atmosphere....
Climate change makes for more extreme weather. The main reasons for this are wind and precipitation. That is why an increasing number of meteorological and hydrological monitoring networks are coming together. Global coverage with hydro-meteorological measuring technology is varied. Very old and very modern (new) measuring networks are used for climate monitoring worldwide. And there are still large gaps, for example on the oceans.
When in businesses such as building construction, agriculture, concrete and asphalt, mining, sandblasting, and smokestacks, fugitive dust can be prevalent. While low levels are unavoidable, many states have regulations concerning the volume of particulate matter an individual business may emit into the ambient air.
FTS designs complete, turn-key systems for a variety of environmental monitoring applications. Our systems are based upon the Axiom datalogger—a key technology that deliver rugged reliability in any environment, simplicity of operation, low maintenance costs, and extremely accurate data.

To measure air quality in the ambient air is a challenge. The monitoring site needs to be representative and not dependant on changes in local traffic. A large number of gaseous components need to be measured with high accuracy and high availability.
Ambient air quality monitoring is the systematic, long-term assessment of pollutant levels by measuring the concentration and types of certain pollutants in the surrounding, outdoor air. Some of these pollutants (commonly called ‘Criteria Pollutants’) are considered hazardous to human health and their levels are regulated by government agencies around the world, including the US EPA. Teledyne API provides a complete line of ambient air quality monitoring instruments, including those for both gas and...
Application: In March 1986 an explosion destroyed a bungalow adjacent to a landfill site in Loscoe, Derbyshire. Subsequent measurements showed that 150-200 cubic meters of gas per hour were being generated by landfill waste. This event triggered a change in the way the waste industry considered and regulated gas generated at landfill sites; resulting in the landfill regulations of 2002, and in particular LFTGN03: the Guidance on the Management of landfill Gas.
Protecting the environment and preserving natural resources is vital to quality of life, sustainable development and biodiversity. Climate change, degradation of habitats and depletion of natural resources are significant risks to economic well-being and may affect the resilience of communities and ecosystems. Satellite Earth observation is a core information source for providing information on the state and change of the environment. Geospatial solutions effectively support environmental monitoring and management...
Paper manufacturing involves many chemical processes that drive the emission of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon dioxide (CO2). Nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide are major contributors of acid rain, whereas CO2 is a greenhouse gas responsible for climate change. In addition, wastewater discharge for pulp and paper mills often contains alcohols, chelating agents, and inorganic materials like chlorates and transition metal compounds. Furthermore, chlorine and compounds of chlorine are used...
OPSIS provides real-time, flexible monitoring of particulate matter in the ambient air. Particulate matter monitoring with OPSIS, is a cost-effective solution, is ideally suited for use in modern monitoring stations. It can be remote controlled and includes automatic calibration, features that frees time. The SM200 meets the new regulation for automatic monitoring of PM10 and PM2.5. It also meets the new regulation for particulate matter sampling on filter membranes for further analysis of cadmium, nickel, PAH...
It is widely understood that manmade CO2 emissions are a major contributor to climate change. As one of the most prevalent greenhouse gases emitted from industry, methods to reduce CO2 are both a political and industrial hot topic. Research continues on ways to harness or reduce CO2 emissions from a variety of sources.
Every year, 35 million hectares —or about 1% of the world’s forests— are lost to wildfire. Recently in North America the area burnt by wildfires has increased sharply, while regions like Southeast Asia and South America have seen a rise in the number of land-clearing fires and other escaped wildfires in equatorial forests.
The extraordinary costs of fire suppression activities are matched only by the damages to property and ecosystems these fire wreak—in South America, this loss is estimated at $1.6 billion...

The process control of a CO2 capture plant needs good and reliable detection of gas phase NH3. Measuring NH3 is a challenge due to the corrosive environment and high concentrations of NH3. Several places in the process needs to be monitored and to transport the sample is difficult. A large dynamic range is needed as the NH3 concentration can vary between 15% volume and a few mg/m3.
