    Fast Water, Rivers & Lakes

Oil spill response operations are notably difficult in rivers with strong current. In addition, when considering response times for river spills in relation to the mobilisation time required for conventional land- or vessel-based boom systems, a timely response is often a logistic impossibility especially in the more remote regions. Therefore, equipment must be readily at hand near the sites of operation and pre-rigged lines, cables and mooring areas are a must. Selection of a good location to deploy the oil containment system is dependent upon prior planning and understanding of the currents. Drift studies, river run off histories, tidal current tables and charts, plus computer modeling are all useful tools to understand the flow patterns and to develop recovery strategies. Reading the currents and flow patterns require practice and understanding of the hydrodynamics involved.

Aerosol and particle technology for process control industry

In order to ensure that an industrial process can be controlled or even improved and optimized continually an analysis of the current situation in real time is necessary. Process data like temperature, pressure but also particle concentration and size distribution of a material flow can supply valuable information and be used for the regulation or the improvement of a process.

Sustainable solutions for transportation & logistics industry

The amount of material flow is increasing rapidly worldwide and therefore, the volume of traffic as well. Currently, the traffic is one of the factors which cause the most greenhouse gas emissions. In Europe, it is the only sector whose greenhouse gas emissions are significantly increasing instead of decreasing. The big challenge of the industry is to handle the increasing amount of material flow and to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and consumption of resources at the same time.  Additionally, there exist other challenges on local scale, such as pollution burden, which can be enforced through a growing urbanisation.

  • Dye Tracing

Monitoring the dilution and movement of a tracer introduced into the water column provides an excellent means of determining the path that may be followed by a discharge and the rate at which dilution is likely to take place. Fluorescent dyes such as Rhodamine, Fluorescein or Agma are the most frequently used tracers for such investigations. Chelsea Technologies has been providing dye tracing systems for over 30 years. Typical applications include sub-sea pipeline leak detection, pollution studies, natural water flow analysis (rivers, lakes, ocean currents, cave water flows, groundwater filtration etc), sewer and storm water drainage analysis. The Chelsea systems can be configured for a wide variety of tracers, are highly sensitive, robust, and deliver real-time data. They can be moored, profiled, towed or affixed to ROV / AUV platforms.

  • Data analysis and visualization tools for groundwater modeling

Groundwater and Solute Transport modeling is a sub discipline of environmental sciences with unique needs. Modeling has long utilized 3D simulations, but the ability to visualize the results has lagged far behind the simulation technology. EVS-PRO and MVS have long offered professional level presentation tools worthy of the current state-of-the-art in modeling, and EnterVol now opens that door to GIS professionals around the world. Visualization of groundwater and solute transport modeling results can be performed from third party modeling systems such as USGS MODFLOW, MT3D, GMS©, Groundwater Vistas and Visual MODFLOW© using C Tech’s tools to convert these modeling outputs into EFF format. In conjunction with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and IT Group, C Tech performed the visualization and animation of the output from a Groundwater Vistas MODFLOW and MT3D99 simulation of a large industrial complex in the central valley area of California.  This site exhibits highly channelized flow which is evidenced by the flow paths. Note that flow in the lower aquifer crosses underneath the upper channels at about 30 degrees!
