  • Ozone/UV systems for drinking water treatment

Multiple treatment reactions and benefits are obtained at ozonation, all at the same time. Ozone based advanced oxidation processes are important because of reactions with organic molecules that are not readily oxidized by ozone. One challenge beverage suppliers face is the need to deliver a product free of bacteria and with extended shelf life. Because of its powerful disinfectant properties, environmentally clean treatment process and its oxidative ability, ozone has become the technology of choice among water bottlers worldwide.

Ultraviolet disinfection systems for the drinking water inspectorate

With atg UV systems treating in excess of 2500 m3/hr daily, Ultraviolet disinfection is no longer an ‘emerging` technology.  A number of Water Treatment Works across the world are now investing heavily in Ultraviolet technology as the threat of chlorine resistant parasites, such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia, continue to pose a serious risk to water companies and their customers. To this end, in the UK, the DWI have issued their guidelines for UV operation and system selection to the UK water industry.  A key feature of their guidance is UV system validation.  Validation refers to a series of 3rd party testing to ensure the performance of an Ultraviolet system design under a range of operating environments.

  • Early warning systems for drinking water

Drinking water supply and distribution systems around the world (a critical and interdependent component of a nation’s infrastructure) are vulnerable to both intentional and accidental contamination. Unusual water quality may serve as a warning of potential contamination. The available physico-chemical sensors utilize general water quality parameters, such as free chlorine, oxidation reduction potential (ORP), total organic carbon (TOC), turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, chloride, ammonia, nitrate to detect the contamination. Generally, one or more of these water quality parameters will change due to the injection of a contaminant. However, no single chemical sensor responds to all possible contaminants nor can they give any indication of the potential toxicity of complex mixtures.

Online Monitoring for the Drinking Water Industry

AppliTek manufactures wet-chemical analyzers specifically designed for measuring on a continuous base the quality indices of drinking water, from raw water intake up to distribution level. Our systems have a small footprint, reduced reagent consumption and show excellent levels of detection in compliance with modern standards.

On top of that, the delivery of safe water throughout the water cycle will raise the need for efficient monitoring systems detecting in real-time contaminations. `Broadband toxicity`, a non-specific parameter defined by AppliTek, is a prodigiously new and clean technology for safeguarding drinking water.

  • Monitoring of Algae in Drinking Water

The UniLux in-situ fluorometer can be configured to detect a number of key parameters that are of importance to the Water Supply Industry. Primarily, the detection of Chlorophyll a in stored water systems, such as reservoirs, assists in the planning and informs decisions on water abstraction in relation to natural algae blooms that regularly occur throughout the year. As well as Chlorophyll a, these in-situ fluorometers can detect cyanobacterias, such as Phycocyanin and Phycoerythrin, which are often associated with algae groups of a toxic nature. Knowledge of concentrations of algae within the water can assist in determining the loading into water processing plants.

These in-situ fluorometers are available as single parameter sensors (UniLux), or 3 channel sensors (TriLux). The CTG FastFlow fast repetition rate fluorometer provides information on the physiological state of algae it monitors. As well as providing detailed information on the growth rate of the algae (which can indicate the occurrence of a future algae bloom), it can immediately inform and alarm on toxins that have accidentally or deliberately been introduced into the water systems, as with the FastGuard system. The FastFlow differs from the FastGuard system in that it logs and displays detailed information on the state of the algae monitored for operational requirements.

  • Protecting of Drinking Water Infrastructure

Water abstraction points may be affected by spills from farms or factories, and deliberate contamination. Early warning monitoring systems are required to alert operators to these contaminants and to changes in key water quality parameters. A timely response is necessary to prevent contamination and disruption of the public water supply.

Chelsea Technologies Group has developed FastGuard to observe the natural trends in water quality parameters and rapidly detect and report anomalies.

FastGuard is ideally suited for early detection of contamination events. It gives prompt reporting and asessment of the threat and has high sensitivity with minimal false alarm rate.

Chlorine Dioxide Water Treatment for the Municipal Drinking Water Treatment

Chlorine dioxide is a well-known disinfectant for drinking water with many advantages over chlorination. Today there are estimated to be over 900 public water systems using chlorine dioxide for water disinfection world-wide. Also in Australia it is approved for a wide range of uses. However, the acceptance of chlorine dioxide in Australia as a disinfecting agent for drinking water has been hampered by the crude methods available for generating chlorine dioxide – methods that require relatively complex equipment and/or produce impure chlorine dioxide with many undesirable impurities.

Water Treatment Solutions for Uranium Removal

AdEdge provides treatment systems for for Uranium removal using AD92 an anion exchange media that is ideal for use in potable water as well as non-potable and environmental remediation applications for removal of naturally occurring uranium. The high efficiency AD92 can selectively remove the negatively charged uranium anion (most often in the form of uranyl carbonate) to below the existing EPA MCL of 30 ug/L. The AdEdge AD92 systems can deliver the needed performance in two ways: (1) via regeneration type systems which use the media to remove the uranium with periodic regeneration using NaCl brine; or (2) as a “throw away” discardable media, which can be discarded when spent. This option maximizes the very high capacity of the AD92. Where on-site regeneration is not available, this disposal option is the preferred option. Disposal options will vary based on federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Disposal and Cleaning Equipment for Waste Water Industy

Drinking water is not the only area requiring flow monitoring. The disposal and cleaning of waste water also requires flow meters. Waste water used to be dumped directly into the soil or an open channel. As awareness has increased, most discharges are now treated to assure long term sustainability. Modern water treatment plants are highly complex systems that require the use of flow sensors to monitor flow velocity in open channels for waste water discharge. Likewise facilities for waste water collection and clarification plants need regular data on flow rate. The use of radar non contact flow measurement and ultrasonic doppler flow meters are particularly efficient. HydroVision can complete flow measurements in all of these areas.
