environmental impact measurement Applications

  • Services related to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

    • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a complex of measures aimed to identify the character, intensity and severity of impact on the environment and public health caused by any kind of planned economic activity. • The purpose of an EIA is to develop the necessary measures to prevent the harmful effects of the proposed economic activity on the environment or minimization of this influence if you can’t eliminate it. EIA is carried out during the design phase, before the construction of the facility. • As a result of the EIA customer receives information about the character and extent of the environmental impact of the proposed economic activity, information about alternative methods of implementation, assessment of the environmental and other related impacts caused by activities of the enterprise.

    Measurement solution for CFC analyser

CFCs are used in the manufacture of insecticides and herbicides and the environmental impact of their use must be well controlled. The treatment of CFC emissions to reduce the emissions in the intermediary steps of production needs to be monitored with 100% efficiency. Protea’s portable CFC analysers and continuous CFC monitoring systems can be configured with various sample inlets and analytical modelling to enable multi-samples to be measured on the one system. This means that both inlet and outlet to abatement systems can be monitored using the one analyser.

  • Pulsar noise testing equipment for environmental noise monitoring

Environmental noise is a major issue in most countries, especially in areas of high population, and the sources of noise and their adverse effects on our well-being are varied. In terms of assessing the impact of these issues, we need to be able to make suitable noise measurements, or in some cases monitor the noise levels for longer periods.

  • Fire Danger Rating / Forecasting

For various reasons, including the changing global climate, wildfires are getting bigger, more destructive and more expensive. Effective, consistent and reliable detection of climate parameters is the key to preventing wildfires and managing the impact they have. Our equipment resides for decades in solitary confinement generally in very remote areas (often at the tops of mountains or deep within a national forest), constantly measuring and recording weather data. Once per hour, this data is transmitted back to government agencies who will analyze and use it to make decisions critical to the safety of the public. In the United States, FTS works closely with the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). The center’s mission is the complex interagency coordination of wildland firefighting resources for the country. One of the resources is the network of remote automated weather stations (RAWS), the vast majority of which are supplied by FTS.

  • Biodiversity Monitoring

In many sectors with large impacts on land such as mining, oil & gas, and construction, it is common for sustainability leaders to assert that they will have ‘no net loss’, or a ‘net positive impact’ on biodiversity. These promises regarding organizational biodiversity performance are proving extremely difficult to test. Our Ecosystem and the Normative Biodiversity Metric give sustainability leaders a chance to measure, analyze and communicate the success of these promises.

Measurement solution for NH3 emissions from livestock enclosures

Ammonia (NH3) is formed from the breakdown of urea in slurry and manure, and hence this is the main source of NH3 emission in the UK. High levels of NH3 emissions can cause a large amount of environmental damage to vegetation. As well as the outward environmental impact, high NH3 concentrations in and around livestock enclosures have a detrimental effect on the health and well-being of the animals.

Measurement solution for CFC abatement control via two stream FTIR system

    CFC usage in industry

Although the use of CFCs in domestic products has been widely phased out, CFCs chemicals still prove a vital ingredient in the production of insecticides and herbicides. Such products aim to increase the rate of crop production all over the world. All aspects of such a manufacturing process in relation to environmental impact must be well controlled. The use and pre-emission removal of CFCs in the intermediary steps of the insecticide production needs to be monitored with 100% efficiency.

  • System Integration Noise Solutions

Environmental noise monitors that connect directly to process measurement and control systems. Many industrial plants have a variety of process sensors strategically placed around their site so that safety, environmental impact and efficiency can be monitored and managed, in real time, from one or more control rooms.

  • Continuous Monitoring of Wastewater

The Sorbisense method allows for efficient monitoring of the sewage system and can help reduce costs of operation and environmental impact. The method is particularly well suited for tracking the source of periodic discharges, the identification of faulty pipe connections of the measuring of values in the recipient. The method also allows for measurements in dynamic sources - such as emissions from roads, roofs, parking lots and overflow

  • Percent Aromatics in Gasoline #3008

The aromatic content of gasoline determines many of its combustion properties. Since it also impacts the environmental characteristics of the fuel it is desirable to have accurate measurements of this parameter. The traditional analytical method for measuring aromatics is either gas chromatography (GC) or an older method entitled fluorescent indicator adsorption (FIA), both of which are time and labor intensive. This note will discuss the use of Guided Wave hardware and software tools for the measurement of % aromatics in fuel products using fiber optic-based, Near-Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. NIR can be applied in real time directly in process monitoring or as a laboratory procedure. In either case NIR is a time and money saving alternative to traditional methods. • Weather Monitoring Systems for industrial and utility sector

The weather can have a major impact on many industrial processes and operations, both from an operational efficiency and/or safety standpoint. For example, real-time information about ambient atmospheric conditions provides the necessary input data required to make the proper decisions during an industrial emergency involving any type of hazardous material. Depending on the plant type, size and age, the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as municipal and state environmental regulatory organizations, also require that a number of basic meteorological variables are measured and recorded on site to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
