Laboratory instruments solutions for environmental industry

The environmental challenges require internationally accepted standards, in which limits and test methods are defined. Metrohm instruments and applications comply with a lot of international environmental standards. Substances introduced into the environment are distributed among the environmental compartments water, soil (sediment), and air, as well as among the organisms living in them (biosphere). Only if we know the type and quantity of these contaminants can we protect the environment and its inhabitants.

Instruments and analyzers for DHI measurements

Diffuse irradiance measurements: Diffuse Horizontal Irradiance measurements are performed with a thermopile sensor called Pyranometer mounted on a Sun tracker or shading ring.  When the pyranometer is installed on an automatic sun tracker, the diffuse radiation can be measured in two different ways. Measuring Diffuse irradiance requires an accurate pyranometer with low offset properties. Duirng clear sky conditions the DHI irradiance (W/m2) is less than 20% of the total irradiance. Zero offsets lead to underestimation of the measured irradiance.

Instruments and analyzers for DNI measurements with a pyrheliometer

Solar Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI) represents the direct solar component and contains about 80% of the total solar energy budget on earth. Outside the atmosphere (AM0) the solar irradiance is considdered as a constant (1367 W/m2) that slightly fluctuates with a 11 year cycle. The DNI at the earth surface is highly variable due to the atmospheric conditions (clouds, aerosols, water vapor and molecules).

Instruments and analyzers for measuring spectral irradiance

Spectral irradiance is the irradiance of a surface per unit frequency or wavelength. spectral irradiance of a wavelength spectrum is measured per watts per square metre per nanometre (W·m−2·nm−1). Spectroradiometers are devices designed to measure the spectral power distribution of a source. From the spectral power distribution, the radiometric, photometric, and colorimetric quantities of light can be determined in order to measure, characterize, and calibrate light sources for various applications. Spectroradiometers typically measures the spectral irradiance and spectral radiance. Spectroradiometers systems work without the need to be connected to a PC. This makes them highly portable while maintaining the accuracy of a spectrometer.

Instruments and analyzers for spectral irradiance portable solutions

Reflection and transmission measurements on materials, vegetation, water or atmosphere give valuable information about biological, physical and chemical processes. Processes driven by solar radiation, in particular bands of the spectrum through the so called action spectra, can be analysed or quantified with a sensor senitive in the particular spectral band. The MS-720 portable spectroradiometer gives total freedom to be used in different applications and range of the spectrum between 350 - 1050 nm.

  • Precision moisture analysis instruments for moisture and solids testing for batteries

Quickly test cathode powders and other advanced materials: In batteries, it has never been more critical to get the best quality product to market. Whether intended for an electric car, a smartphone, or a smoke detector, the quality of any battery will depend on how accurately its moisture content is controlled. Computrac can help. Computrac can quickly provide moisture-specific and total solids content results in a manner that does not depend on operator technique. In addition to instruments based on the loss-on-drying principle, Computrac offers a reagent-free alternative to Karl Fischer titration which is ideal for testing moisture in cathode powders and other advanced materials.

  • Instrumentation technologies for marine

When ships discharge their bilge water the maximum level of hydrocarbons in the water is regulated by various Environmental Protection Agencies, for example there is a limit of 15ppm enforced by the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) in all international waters.  Companies breaching these limits are liable to significant fines. Further regulations have been introduced to control the use of bunker fuels. The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the IMO has approved proposed amendments to the MARPOL Annex VI regulations to reduce harmful emissions from ships.

    Analytical instruments for atomic spectroscopy

Besides Mass Spectrometry, a further variety of analysis techniques are categorized as atomic spectroscopy. Analysis techniques which use inductively coupled plasma (ICP), such as ICP-OES and ICP-MS, are among these. With increasing environmental awareness backed by regulations, an increasingly important use of atomic spectroscopy techniques is in mercury analysis. Achieving a high mass flow control performance, e.g. high repeatability or an excellent turn-down ratio, is a prerequisite to achieve a high analyzer performance. For this, a number of Axetris customers rely on our products while designing such systems.

  • Instrumentation technologies for offshore industry

Offshore installations, whether it’s a drilling rig, production platform or FPSO, have some of the most testing operating environments possible. Operators must combine the drive to efficiency with their environmental commitments. Whatever analyzer you choose should not only match your needs and add value but must not take up valuable resources whether that’s personnel or consumables.
