    Waste recovery for nuclear wastes

Nuclear waste is divided into low, medium, and high‐level waste by the amount of radiological character it contains. Low and Intermediate Level Nuclear waste is the radioactive waste resulting from nuclear facility consumables, clothing, laboratory equipment etc. This waste can adversely affect human health and the environment and therefore must be handled appropriately. Typically, the waste is kept underwater for 3-5 years until the radiation decays to levels that can be shielded by concrete in large storage casks, where it can be held for thousands of years. A challenge for the nuclear industry is the cost associated with conditioning, packaging and storage of these heterogeneous wastes. Therefore, a solution that can decrease the volume of nuclear waste, and reduce the amount of storage required, is considered a commercially advantageous option.

Shredders and crushers for LCD monitor recycling

According to initial estimates, in Germany about three million LCD monitors will be recycled in the year 2016. However, they often still have backlighting containing mercury and therefore have to be classified as “hazardous waste” in accordance with the German General Administrative Regulation (AVV) and registered in compliance with the German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (Elektro G) under category 3. Whereby special conditions must ensure that no risk arises from the mercury for the environment or for humans. However, because of a lack of suitable automated procedures for the recycling of LCD monitors, it was to date only possible to dissemble the appliances laboriously by hand, with the ensuing health dangers for the workers.

  • Waste gas & wastewater treatment for the solar industry

Generating solar energy is considered `green technology`, even though the production of solar cells based on silicon predominantly uses process stages that have been common practice in the semiconductor industry for many years. As in the semiconductor industry the production of solar cells employs dangerous and environmentally harmful substances, which require abatement according to legal provisions. The production of photovoltaic cells therefore is subject to strict requirements for treatment of waste gases and wastewater. Solutions need to be easy and cost-effective. The contaminated wastewaters and waste gases should, under no circumstances, lower performance, endanger the health and safety of humans, or otherwise negatively affect the availability of production facilities. The safety of the production line must be guaranteed at every step and in every operating situation.

  • Groundwater Monitoring for Remediation

Many fresh water sources have been degraded to toxic levels by the inclusion of industrial, agricultural, and human waste products that have been discharged into the closest body of water, accidentally or deliberately for many years.

    Mercury monitoring for on-site remediation

Fugitive emissions can be a health concern during removal and disposal of mercury-contaminated material at remediation sites. Thus, remediation projects either indoors or outdoors often require on-site, real-time mercury air monitoring with a Tekran 2537. This assures permitted levels are not exceeded during waste processing and human exposure levels are below government regulated toxicity thresholds. Often multiple sites must be monitored continuously. The Tekran 1115 Multi-Port Sampler is the ideal tool for multiplexing the Tekran 2537 for real-time continuous on-site monitoring of mercury fugitive emissions. Please contact us for more information on mercury remediation monitoring.

Industrial briquette presses for Biomass briquetting

Harness the energy that’s inside your biomass! For too long, human and naturally produced substances have been disregarded. Straw, hay, tobacco, nutshells, miscanthus, pulse parings, cotton and flax are valuable resources for heat energy generation. The briquette shape makes your waste more cost effective to transport and ready in a saleable format. The calorific value of highly compressed briquettes is much greater than of lose material also optimising the combustibility characteristics. Additionally, explosive dust can be handled more safely. Efficient re-utilization of biomass as a cheap alternative fuel source cannot be ignored, particularly in the production of agricultural foods.

Shredders for Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and Refrigerators

Electric and electronic waste (WEEE), are coming from technology products such as home appliances (washing machines, vacuum cleaners), computers and tools. An economy based on the consumption such as today, provides a continuous increase of WEEE, and determines an increasing risk of dropping out in the environment or in landfills, with the consequences of pollution of soil, air, water and health human repercussions. These products should be handled properly and used for the differential recovery of the materials they are made of, such as copper, iron, steel, aluminum, glass, silver, thus avoiding a waste of resources that can be reused to build new equipment in addition to the environmental sustainability.

Radiation Monitoring for Medicine and Research laboratories

Medicine and Research laboratories The medical industry uses radioactivity to explore and heal the human body. In pharmaceutical laboratories, nuclear medicine practitioners and patients alike are exposed to ionizing radiation to various extents. These internal and external doses, generated by radiotherapy, scintigraphy and sealed or unsealed sources, require special precautions. Saphymo designs and manufactures various dose monitoring solutions, ranging from individual radiation protection to process and waste control. Research labs using accelerators or reactors can also rely on Saphymo’s ability to meet safety requirements by providing highly technical, custom-made devices suitable for monitoring both very low and very high activity. The Saphymo product ranges, from Radiation Monitoring Systems developed from A-Z by Saphymo to Survey meters and dosimetry, meet medical and research requirements to the full.

  • Pumping solutions for offshore liquid ring pump systems

In offshore drilling, the safety of both people and the environment is dependent on the constant management of risk. With great public concern and media attention, the safety of offshore drilling for both people and environment, has been widely discussed for many years. Offshore drilling can potentially cause oil spills or disposal of other waste into the ocean, impacting human life and marine life.

  • Odour and corrosion treatment solutions for wastewater treatment industry

Odour emissions form a serious problem for many people that live near or work in places which produce odours. These places can be factories, wastewater treatment plants, farms like pig and poultry breeders, solid waste disposal facilities and landfills. As some odourous compounds can be harmful for the health of humans other are simply unpleasant and can cause health problems when exposed to on a continuous basis. In either case something needs to be done about it.

  • Continuous Monitoring of Nitrates and Other Water Quality Parameters

Nitrate is one of the most important parameters in assessing surface and ground water quality. Nitrates are naturally present in surface and ground waters in low concentrations, but are harmful to humans and livestock and cause aquatic ecosystem degradation in high concentrations. Nitrates enter the environment as human-induced pollution from a variety of sources, but the largest source is from agricultural fertilizer runoff . Other sources include wastewater treatment discharge, septic systems, and from pet waste. Nitrate is highly soluble in water and therefore readily leaches into water sources, whereas other human associated pollutants, such as phosphates and ammonia, are not transported as easily. This ability to be quickly transported into ground and natural waters such as drinking water wells, aquifers, reservoirs, lakes, and streams, coupled with its health and environmental implications make nitrate pollution and monitoring of major concern.
