landfill waste Applications

  • Landfill lining

GCLs have become the gold standard clay component of composite lining systems used in industrial, hazardous and municipal solid waste landfills. Used alone or in combination with a geomembrane in a composite cover system, GCLs provide significantly lower permeability, improved ease of installation, an increased amount of usable space. In many cases GCLs are more cost-effective than traditional compacted clay liners. GCLs are also not subject to deterioration from differential settlement and freeze-thaw cycles, which can damage traditional compacted clay liners. Important design considerations for GCLs in landfill caps include confining pressure, and potential for ion exchange and desiccation.

  • Mined Landfill

Mining landfill is an innovative practice, which is a paradigm shift in waste management, where landfills can be considered storage of feedstock for waste to energy plants such as Gasplasma®. It works by: Extracting buried waste / Recovering valuable recyclates: glass, metals, hard plastics / Returning land for alternative uses / Eliminating greenhouse gas emissions caused by decomposing wastes

  • Waste shredding for the landfill industry

However enormous a landfill site first appears, it is surprising how quickly - and how ineffectively - it can become full. Regardless of how bulky, resilient or abrasive the waste may be, effective shredding makes best use of the space available by considerably reducing the volume of waste. Metso shredder equipment includes three sizes of mobile shredders with a variety of mounts, all capable of providing a range of grain sizes. This makes it easy to select the most efficient and cost effective shredding solution for a wide variety of landfills.

  • Landfill Piping Solutions

Landfills are active environments. Through natural processes of rainfall, condensation, and decomposition, landfills themselves produce a liquid waste stream, called leachate. Often the leachate contains hazardous materials, so properly managing a landfill requires handling the waste. ISCO offers products and services to help manage leachate including HDPE landfill pipe, perforated and slotted pipe as well as custom fabricated fittings.

High quality gas sensor solutions for landfill

State-of-the-art systems enabling easy monitoring of CO2 and CH4 gases. Capped Landfill Sites produce a range of gases, mostly methane and carbon dioxide. Legislation requires that these gases are safely removed from beneath the cap to avoid a physical explosion due to the build-up of pressure beneath the cap. Safe disposal usually entails burning such as flare stacks, internal combustion engines or by processing to produce Methane gas fuel. For large sites with access to power distribution infrastructure internal combustion engines are used to generate electricity which is fed into the local electricity grid. All of the above safe disposal process require the measurement of the Methane content (and in many cases the CO2 concentration). Edinburgh Sensors provide gas sensors for both Methane and CO2 that can be integrated into landfill gas processing systems enabling easy monitoring of these gases.

PEHD membrane sealing systems for landfill surface liners

Unlike base liners, surface liners are not buried at some point under many metres of waste and instead are usually protected over the course of many years only by a 1-metre thick mineral layer. As a result, there can be uncertainty about the integrity of their leak-proofing characteristics, particularly if the land is subsequently used for other purposes; however, at the same time, repairs are also possible at reasonable cost if the location of any damage can be established.

Methane and Carbon Dioxide Sensing for Landfill Applications

Application: In March 1986 an explosion destroyed a bungalow adjacent to a landfill site in Loscoe, Derbyshire. Subsequent measurements showed that 150-200 cubic meters of gas per hour were being generated by landfill waste. This event triggered a change in the way the waste industry considered and regulated gas generated at landfill sites; resulting in the landfill regulations of 2002, and in particular LFTGN03: the Guidance on the Management of landfill Gas.
