Mercury monitoring for measuring mercury content in hair

Measurement of mercury content in hair is a convenient technique to estimate dietary exposure without having to handle tissues or bodily fluids. As the mercury present in hair is comprised of different mercury species, full speciation of the compounds is needed for complete understanding. Environment Canada published a technique where treating a basic digestion with Cd2+ in the presence of cysteine allowed analysis of inorganic mercury and total mercury using a Tekran 2600 System. Methyl mercury was then calculated by difference. Tekran has over 18 application notes available for Tekran 2600 users.

  • Mercury Removal from Ash

A by-product from burning pulverized coal in electric power generating plants, fly ash can contain substantial levels of mercury which can negatively impact human health and the environment. Responding to the threat of mercury exposure, the EPA has established tough standards for the power industry to meet. VulcanĀ® Systems Thermal Desorption Units remove mercury from fly ash, making the end product reusable for concrete production. Through this process, power plants are able to create a new revenue stream through the sale of clean fly ash, eliminate expensive disposal costs, and protect the environment. Besides solving the disposal problem, adding fly ash to concrete improves the quality of the concrete. As a replacement for Portand Cement, the use of fly ash saves on material expenses, decreases permeability, and prevents expansion, thermal cracking, and efflorescence. It also increases working time, and makes pumping and finishing much easier.

    Mercury monitoring for on-site remediation

Fugitive emissions can be a health concern during removal and disposal of mercury-contaminated material at remediation sites. Thus, remediation projects either indoors or outdoors often require on-site, real-time mercury air monitoring with a Tekran 2537. This assures permitted levels are not exceeded during waste processing and human exposure levels are below government regulated toxicity thresholds. Often multiple sites must be monitored continuously. The Tekran 1115 Multi-Port Sampler is the ideal tool for multiplexing the Tekran 2537 for real-time continuous on-site monitoring of mercury fugitive emissions.
