Air sampling & monitoring systems for occupational health & safety industry

HI-Q considers the responsibility for worker health and safety to be of paramount importance. This is a responsibility that requires good documentation of facts. Many studies are conducted to evaluate workplace health and safety conditions as they relate to workers exposure to radiation, chemicals, and biological hazards during the normal work day. HI-Qs wide line of air sampling equipment, systems and accessories are used in the monitoring then documentation of these workplaces.

  • Indoor quality monitoring for health and safety

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a major influence on the health, comfort and productivity of a building’s occupants. With 90% of our time spent indoors, determining the quality of the air that surrounds us is important.

    Abatement and Remediation

Containment and safety issues are a critical consideration when working on any mold, asbestos, or lead remediation/abatement projects. Improperly contained, the dust and bio-contaminants released can, be very harmful for both on-site workers and occupants in neighboring areas. Exactly how you approach your containment and capture solutions will depend on the individual site’s risk assessment report. If you need help identifying solutions to the issues raised in the report, feel free to contact our customer service department and we can review your options together. In most cases, however, there are four common considerations that will be relevant: -Meeting Containment and Air Change Requirements -Monitoring of Containment Pressure -Sterilization of Filtered Air -Removal of Odors, Mold Spores, VOC’s and other Airborne Bio-Contaminates

Analysis of Isocyanates Using the ASSET™ EZ4-NCO Dry Sampler

Isocyanates are used as a raw material to produce a number of products . Personal exposure can occur while the products made with isocyanates are being applied, or when the materials are removed by grinding or thermal degradation. Workers who are exposed to these compounds are at risk for respiratory disorders and asthma. The highly reactive nature of the isocyanate compounds and the low occupational exposure limits put high demands on both sampling and analytical techniques for monitoring of isocyanates in air. We investigated the performance of the LC-MS and LC-MS-MS methods in the analysis of isocyanates using the new ASSET™ EZ4-NCO Dry Sampler. We found that the analytical method can successfully reach the quantitation limit for most isocyanates of 5 ng/mL in the final sample when LC-MS-MS analysis was used and the quantitation limit of 10 ng/mL when LC-MS analysis was used. All 11 compounds were well-resolved chromatographically using a 15 cm Ascentis Express C18 column.

    Indoor Air Quality Monitoring

Accurate control of critical indoor environmental parameters is not only essential for the well-being and comfort of building occupants, but also has a major impact on energy efficiency. A multitude of parameters can affect indoor air quality (IAQ) from gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and volatile organic compounds to particulates, humidity and bacteria such as legionella. CO2 is one of the greatest variables affecting indoor environmental quality since it is produced by people occupying the building. CO2 production is a function of the number, size and activity levels of the people present in the building. Local concentrations can therefore vary dramatically – for example when a meeting room is occupied, or while workers are on lunch or coffee breaks. Excess CO2 levels can lead to tiredness and a lack of concentration and can contribute to the symptoms of Sick Building Syndrome such as headaches, eye, nose and throat irritation, itchy skin and nausea.

  • Air monitoring equipments for workplace and personal exposure monitoring

Many occupations involve the use of hazardous substances or processes, where pollutants may be ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. General ambient pollutants can also have health implications in otherwise non-hazardous workplaces. Occupational exposure limits regulate many pollutants based on an eight-hour working day. Personal exposure assessments can be made over an eight-hour period (Time Weighted Average (TWA) exposure) using our simple to use monitoring equipment.

Measurement of ethylene oxide for monitoring workplace exposure limits

The Series 8900 Ethylene Oxide Analyzer combines the selectivity of gas chromatography with the sensitivity of a Photoionization Detector (PID) providing interference free response to Ethylene Oxide (EtO) at levels below 0.05 ppm. This analytical method is referenced in OSHA`s `Occupational Exposure to Ethylene Oxide: Final Standard` 29 CFR Part 1910. The system documents exposure levels including: time-weighted averages (TWA), short-term exposure limits (STEL) and instantaneous alarms. Areas that are typically monitored include; EtO Sources - gas storage areas, sterilizer doors, aeration doors, and the General Work Area - decontamination, packaging and preparation and sterile product storage areas.

    Restoration

Restoring structures after floods and fires is a constantly evolving industry. In addition to keeping up with industry best practices for health and safety of both the contractors and the building residents post restoration, it is also important to be working with modern and reliable restoration equipment. Utilizing Omnitec and OmniAire products will allow you to take advantage of the latest best practice methods with equipment you know will work reliably and safely. Airborne contaminates and dust is a significant consideration for almost any restoration project. Did you know that studies have shown a substantial increase in air particulate matter during the drying process? Not only does dust and contaminates affect your worker’s safety, but also the safety of the post-restoration occupants. Just increasing the air circulation doesn’t remedy the situation and, without adequate filtration, may actually create more problems.

  • Smoke generator devices for lev testing, spray booth clearance testing & air testing

For many years, materials containing isocyanate have been the single biggest cause of occupational asthma in the UK. Vehicle paint sprayers are 80 times more likely to develop occupational asthma than workers in other industries. This is caused by the inhalation of the fine paint mist that is generated when paint spraying. There is a requirement for the measurement and display of `clearance times` for spray booths / rooms set by the HSE and the Motor Vehicle Repair (MVR) to meet the requirements of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH).

  • Laser & Plasma Cutting

Laser & Plasma Cutting fumes are Unbreathable. Using laser or plasma cutting equipment on either metals or plastics introduces several known carcinogens, such as fused silica and ethyl acrylate, into the air. Occupational Health and Safety organizations recommend reducing personal exposure to the lowest level feasible. Hand held plasma cutting provides metalworkers with a quick and fast way to cut large sheets of metal material. However, plasma and oxy cutting generate a large amount of sparks, slag and fume which can contain different pollutants depending on the type of material being cut. Diversitech's line of downdraft tables incorporating the plasma cutting kit are designed to extinguish the sparks and slag, using heavy duty steel bar grating and a gravel filled baffle tray while the blower pulls away all of the toxic plasma cutting fumes. When considering how to capture and filter the fumes generated from large CNC plasma cutting and laser cutting machines, a large central dust
