  • Ozone Water Treatment for Activated Sludge Process Plants

    Ozone breaks up filaments and improves settling characteristics of the sludge... Filamentous sludge is a common problem at activated sludge plants. With ozonation of the return sludge flow it is possible to reduced the amount of filamentous bacteria in the sludge and significantly increased the settling properties of the sludge.This in turn means better performance of the activated sludge process. When a bioreactor is connected to the sludge line the removal of the damaging filamentous bacteria means higher quality sludge in the bioreactor, which leads to higher biogas production.

    In 2004-2005 LIFETECH`s laboratory worked out an advanced oxidation process (AOP) for removal of dioxins and furans (PCDD/F), chlorophenols and other contaminants from the BCD process wastewater. Consequently, our technology was installed and from April 2006 successfully used in the `Spolana-Dioxins` Project at SPOLANA a.s. in Neratovice, Czech Republic, as a part of Special Wastewater Treatment Plant. Our supply consisted of an ozone generator with the output of 5 kg O3/h at 10% w/w ozone concentration, two reaction tanks with mixing systems, a vent ozone destructor, and a control system. The world largest project for removal of PCDD/F was managed by BCD CZ a.s., a subsidiary of Thermal and Chemical Soil Remediation Ltd.

    The process to reduce the amount of microorganisms in water, by means of ultraviolet light is called “ultraviolet disinfection”. It is used in all kinds of water to reduce the amount of microorganisms such as bacteria, protozoa, viruses, fungi, algae. Ultraviolet (UV) light is a natural part of sunlight, whereas the short wavelengths are absorbed by the protecting ozone layer. UV lamps designed for water disinfection use a gas mixture containing the element mercury (Hg).     Advanced Oxidation reactions are an extension of the process whereby UV alone is used to reduce Total Organic Carbon (TOC) through the lysing of water molecules into hydroxyl radicals. Hydroxyl radicals (OH) are produced with the help of one or more primary oxidants (usually ozone or hydrogen peroxide) and ultraviolet light. This reactive species is the strongest oxidant that can be applied in water and can oxidize virtually any compound present in the water.
