  • Waste water respirometry solutions for toxicity reduction tests

In industrial manufacturing companies, before a new process comes on-line, it is important to measure the toxicity of the effluent stream. This is especially the case for companies who treat their own waste. From the toxicity value (EC50) obtained, it may be a cost-effective solution to simply discharge the effluent to the treatment works at a slow and defined rate to minimise damage to the activated sludge. Following a period of acclimatisation it is often possible to increase feed rates to the plant and this can again be managed using the Strathtox Respirometer. An alternative approach is to undertake toxicity reduction procedures, such as neutralisation or acid hydrolysis, in pilot-scale laboratory studies. The Respiration or the Nitrification Inhibition Test may be used for this. In the future, toxicity reduction may be stipulated by local authority, water company or publicly-owned treatment works prior to giving discharge consents. Toxicity reduction may be evaluated using toxicity tests on activated sludge provided by the treatment works.

  • COD Reduction

Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is used as a measure of organic pollutants in water. In wastewater treatment, it indicates the efficacy of a treatment process and is expressed in milligrams per litre (mg/L) or parts per million (ppm). Removing certain fractions of COD in waste streams can be particularly challenging, especially to levels safe for discharge to the environment.

  • Membrane filtration systems for reduction of BOD/COD

Reverse Osmosis Polishers can concentrate BOD/COD from evaporator condensate and RO permeate streams to reduce waste water. Polished water can also be re-used in plant for boiler water make-up and CIP systems. In Dairy Industry applications, `polishing` of these process water streams aids in the production of Class I water for re-use from dairy products as defined and regulated under Food & Drug Administration rules. Water produced with this technique is also very soft, generally resulting in lower cleaning chemical consumption.

Recycling equipments for shredding solid waste & municipal solid waste

Solid waste and municipal solid waste (MSW) size reduction requires processing of many different materials, from filled drums to household waste. And, as the amount of solid waste increases and the cost of landfill management increases, it is becoming more critical that waste management become more effective, economic and efficient. Shredded and compacted waste is easier and cheaper to transport and extends the life of the landfill. In addition, separating out materials that can be reclaimed and recycled or that need to be incinerated or composted increases the landfill productivity while providing revenue to offset the costs of processing the solid waste.

Recycling EPS with Styrofoam Shredders & Compactors

Used Styrofoam, also called EPS or expandable polystyrene foam, is light, hygienic and commonly used to pack food, drinks, fragile and deformable goods. Usually, Styrofoam products are 98% air and only 2% PS. It has been a big environmental problem due to the fact that the material is difficult to recycle and costly to transport. Harden Machinery has been dedicated to Styrofoam/EPS/XPS volume reduction technologies and the Styrofoam/EPS/XPS densifier is one of our major products. With our Styrofoam/EPS/XPS densifiers, the Styrofoam/EPS/XPS foam blocks are compacted into densified logs and can be easily transport for further processing such as extrusion pelletizing.

    Cardboard shredders for cardboard recycling

Makes even the biggest mountains of cardboard into molehills! Every year, Germany produces around 10 million tonnes of cardboard and paperboard for the packaging industry. After their use, these items of cardboard packaging and boxes must then be reduced in volume before passing through the recycling process. This volume reduction step is performed by recycling companies and public recycling depots or in cardboard packaging and corrugated board factories.
