    Monitoring of hydrocarbons in bilge water

    The Situation

    Various processes onboard ships, such as machinery wash-down, maintenance, and leakage, generate oily wastewater. This contaminated water flow collects in the bilge of the ship. Marine diesel, lubricating oils, grease, as well as other contaminants may be present in bilge water. The bilge water is discharged overboard, with oil and grease concentrations in the discharged water limited by national and international regulations.

    Monitoring of raw water intake

    The Situation:

    Hydrocarbons in municipal water supplies,  including fresh water and desalination systems, are commonly limited to less than 1 part per million. Surface water from rivers, lakes, or the sea with marine traffic, nearby pipelines, or regular flooding can be contaminated by hydrocarbons. Freshwater treatment systems can be damaged by hydrocarbons or allow them to pass through undetected. Desalination systems using reverse osmosis (RO) membranes can be irreversibly damaged by the presence of hydrocarbons. Continuous monitoring of water source intakes can prevent system contamination and subsequent damage.  Accurate, low maintenance monitoring systems such as the TD-4100 XD and XDC have been protecting water intakes worldwide for over 20 years.

    In a Steamflood Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) process, steam is injected in the well, lowering the viscosity of heavy oil suitable for extraction through the production wells. The fluid from the wells is a mixture of oil, water and gas and goes through a separation system to separate the three. The separated produced water is heavily contaminated with dissolved solids and hydrocarbons.   • Solutions for the aerobic bioremediation

    BioSolve Pinkwater is used to accelerate natural bioremediation of contaminated soil either on site through surface application or on land farms through application to biopiles. When Pinkwater solution is sprayed onto and aggressively mixed into contaminated soil, hydrocarbons come in contact with the strongly “lipophilic” (oil loving) surfactant. Mimicking the process by which bacteria make hydrocarbons digestible, the surfactants “solubilize” contaminates, pulling them into an aqueous phase. This greatly enhances “bioavailability” for naturally occurring hydrocarbon degrader bacteria. Bacteria are able to more rapidly consume the contaminating oil/fuel, thereby dramatically accelerating the biodegradation process.

    Monitoring of leaks in heat exchangers

    The Situation

    A California refinery produces xylene for use as commercial product and a precursor for petrochemical manufacturing. A primary component to the production of xylene is the isolation and purification of the chemical from a complex mixture of petroleum hydrocarbons. Steam based heat exchangers are used to process the xylene. Inherent to the design and rough duty heat exchangers face during their operation, leaks can and do develop. When a heat exchanger leaks, xylene contaminates the steam and produces a number of problems ranging from loss of final product, contamination and fouling of steam transfer piping, and ultimately bio-fouling of cooling towers. Consistent and reliable monitoring for xylene or other petroleum hydrocarbons in cooling water or steam condensate can alleviate product loss and process equipment down time.

  • Airport Environmental Monitoring

    Water pollution from airport run-off is increasingly coming under public and government scrutiny. As environmental regulations tighten, the ability to monitor for aviation fuel contamination from runway run-off has become essential.

    Monitoring sites at airports can be extremely challenging often with no power or telephone lines available and with limited access for maintenance. Chelsea’s robust UviLux Hydrocarbon Sensor with its low power consumption and high accuracy is ideally suited for this application. Installed at various locations around the airport, deployed with it’s own integrated anti-biofouling system, utilising the GSM network, the monitoring sites send data to a secure ftp site, where any internet enabled device can access the data. In this way the systems act as any early warning system allowing any hydrocarbon discharge to be detected in real-time.

    Optional environmental monitoring features include remote control to allow the user to turn equipment on and off, change the sample rate and detection range. There is also a facility to allow SMS text and email alarm notifications triggered by user-defined set-points together with customised web pages, data displays and automated data downloads via an ftp server.

    Airport runoff can contain high concentrations of various pollutants, in particular polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), the environmental levels of which have to be monitored. An understanding of the magnitude of contamination due to airport runoff water is important for the effective management of airport infrastructure.
