    Monitoring Raw Water Intake

The Situation: Hydrocarbons in water intake used for municipal drinking water and desalination systems are commonly limited to 1 part per million. Problem: Naturally occurring organics in raw water are typically treated with chemicals. Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analyzers in the water treatment system can alert technicians when some type of organic material is present but cannot differentiate between natural organics, such as algae or leaves and hydrocarbons. Solution: A fluorescence monitor can be configured for sensitivity to hydrocarbons, with no significant response to other organics. The TD-4100XDC has the highest sensitivity to hydrocarbons in raw water, has a low cost of ownership, and can be modified with Teflon, Monel, and other corrosion resistant materials for sea water environments. Please visit http://www.oilinwatermonitors.com/applications-2/raw-water-intake for more information about this application.

  • Industrial and commercial water filtration for bore-hole intake

When considering filtration methods, many industries use alternative water sources such as river, borehole, canal or sea-water extraction as a low cost solution for cooling water and various other operations on-site. Although water extraction is a low cost option the water can be of low quality and can cause problems and damage to the system, meaning more resources, time and expense in fixing the problem.

    Sea Water Intakes & Outfalls

Desalinated sea water is a major water source for many countries. These facilities are often built with power generation plant and a major factor for all installations is reliability. This reliability starts with the sea water intake and regardless of the desalination technology (MSF, MED, RO) unplanned plant shut downs due to the ingress of hydrocarbons or a sudden jelly fish attack are absolutely unacceptable. The DESMI Oil Spill Response segment have many years experience in the design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of permanent oil boom and jelly fish net systems for a vast range of sea water intake systems. We have an impressive history of proven oil spill technology at various locations around the world including the harsh Middle East environment.

  • Water intake protection monitoring for wastewater treatment industry

Intake protection systems have been extensively installed to protect water treatment works, from ingress of polluted water and waste-water plants from toxic chemical loads. A suitable system typically comprises a suit of instrumentation, measuring key chemical, physical and indicator parameters dependant upon the identified risks, associated with the individual site activity or discharges from neighbouring industry.

algae control in drinking water plants

By controlling algae, cyanobacteria and fouling LG Sonic can efficiently reduce taste and odor problems in a treatment plant. The performance of a drinking water treatment plant is consistent with the amount ol contamination in the water. Growth of algae and other fouling in and before a treatment plant can cause various problems within the process. In general, these issues are related with taste or odor of the water. Growth of algae, cyanobacteria and bacteria within the basins of the plant itself, increase the demand of chemicals or filtration and in turn creating problems with THM (trihalomethane) formation. Other common issues are growth of toxin and geosmin producing cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) within the intake reservoir or dam. These molecules give the water an unpleasant `earthy ` taste.

Online Monitoring for the Drinking Water Industry

AppliTek manufactures wet-chemical analyzers specifically designed for measuring on a continuous base the quality indices of drinking water, from raw water intake up to distribution level. Our systems have a small footprint, reduced reagent consumption and show excellent levels of detection in compliance with modern standards.

On top of that, the delivery of safe water throughout the water cycle will raise the need for efficient monitoring systems detecting in real-time contaminations. `Broadband toxicity`, a non-specific parameter defined by AppliTek, is a prodigiously new and clean technology for safeguarding drinking water.

    Algae control

Excessive algae growth can throw even the best water treatment processes out of balance. Algae can clog intake screens, fluctuate pH levels, increase chlorine demand, and negatively affect the taste and smell of water. By blocking sunlight within water treatment tanks, you can stop algae growth, reduce chemical usage, and minimize the formation of disinfectant by-products (DBPs). Temperature is better controlled and maintenance associated with algae cleaning is simplified. The results? Better water treatment and lower operating costs.

  • Real-time In-situ Effluent Monitoring

The UviLux BOD Indicator enables in-situ, real-time, reporting of BOD within both natural water systems and water processing plants. The monitor detects fluorescent proteins that are inherent within sewage and slurry and provides an output in BOD equivalent units. The principle behind the measurement is the excitation of Tryptophan-like fluorescence within UV wavelength band, which has been shown to correlate with both BOD and bacterial contamination. With complete flexibility of deployment methodology, the UviLux BOD Indicator can be applied to both water supply and water recovery processing plants. For water supply processing, the UviLux BOD Indicator can be applied at the front end to the water intake to provide alarm of any contaminated water entering the plant. Applications within Waste Water Treatment Works can include monitoring of effluent levels at the final outflow point (into rivers and coastal areas) as well as the primary, secondary & tertiary stages, the data potentially feeding into energy saving systems to optimise process performances. The CTG UviLux BOD Indicator in-situ fluorometer can also be used within pipe and channel networks to test for incidences of black water and grey water cross-over.

  • Monitoring Sewage Flow

Monitoring Sewage Flow is a critical tool for local governments, for water and waste-water utilities and for industrial plants. Sewage monitoring can prevent environmental disasters such as sewage overflow within populated neighborhoods or excessive waste flow into local lakes, rivers or sea. Sewage monitoring is also an important tool for short term and long term planning of the sewers infrastructure. Short term refers to just-in-time and cost effective maintenance. For example, sending the technical team to the correct manhole at the correct time to clean and eliminate obstructions. Long term planning refers to designing the correct pipe diameters and correct slopes to contain sewage from new new buildings and plants. Sewage monitoring is a tool for billing plants who produce sewage above their water intake and a tool for plants which utilize water to request lower utility bills. Solid Applied Technologies provides a complete and tested solution for Sewer Monitoring.
