Abstract : A preliminary evaluation of techniques of sampling and gas chromatographic analysis for low levels of sulfur hexafluoride was conducted to determine the most feasible method for available equipment. Using a Tracor MT-150 gas chromatograph equipped with Nickel 63 electron capture detector and polarized dc voltable, it was possible to detect sulfur hexafluoride at a concentration of 0.06 ppb with a 5A molecular sieve column and nitrogen carrier gas, without preconcentration of the sample. Also, a comparison of glass and Saran sampling materials proved that no detectable loss of the tracer gas resulted with the Saran bags (between 6 ppm and 0.06 ppb SF6
