Ultraviolet disinfection systems for the offshore potable drinking water - Water and Wastewater - Drinking Water
Our cutting-edge UV systems safeguard your drinking water from harmful microorganisms, including Cryptosporidium and Giardia. More and more businesses are adopting UV Water Treatment because it’s a proven and safe alternative for primary disinfection and is free of the harmful by-products associated with chemical disinfection. We deliver world-leading medium pressure and ultra-high output, low-pressure amalgam UV products and turn-key packaged plants for potable drinking water and Cryptosporidium protection.
Advantages of UV Systems For Drinking Water
With independent 3rd party validated performance, UV disinfection is an accepted and widely used method for both the primary disinfection products of potable drinking water (followed by residual chlorine dosing) or as a secondary disinfection to provide a barrier against chlorine-resistant microorganisms such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia.
Specialising in both ultra-compact, medium pressure (polychromatic) UV systems and ultra-high output, low pressure amalgam (monochromatic) UV systems, we have designed and manufactured UV disinfection systems, integrated UV plants and mobile, turn-key UV packages for some of the worlds’ largest municipal water treatment works, treating over 240 MLD (10,000 m3/hr).
UV TREATMENT APPLICATIONS: –
- Primary Disinfection (Surface Water & Ground Water)
- Secondary Barrier Disinfection (Cryptosporidium & 16 chlorine-resistant microorganisms)
- De-chlorination of ‘run to waste’ feed water for environmental discharge
- Water Reuse (reuse of wastewater & grey water) – NWRI (California title 22)
- Advanced oxidation (AOP) and removal of micropollutants & priority substances
OPEX Advantages of UV Disinfection Systems
As operators drive to improve efficiency, many organisations are basing their investment decisions regarding the selection of water treatment equipment on whole-life costing models. This takes into account the capital cost of equipment (CAPEX), and the predicted operational life costs (OPEX) for up to 20 years.
UV disinfection is a cost-effective solution compared to alternative technologies on the market. An annualised cost analysis (see graph) illustrates how UV disinfection is the most cost-effective technology available when compared to nano-filtration, micro-filtration/ultra-filtration, and ozone.
Our UV Disinfection for Drinking Water Applications Are Independently Verified
In order to meet the latest municipal drinking regulations around the world, and can offer UV solutions that have been independently 3rd party verified using bioassay testing with live surrogate micro-organisms (B. Subtilis, MS2 phage T1 & MS2) at a vast range of water qualities.
As a strict requirement of drinking water regulations worldwide, the validated range of UV systems from atg UV Technology are guaranteed to provide protection against a range of micro-organisms such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Adenovirus.
As the leading and most complex independent validation test standard available worldwide, all drinking water systems are tested in accordance with US EPA Ultraviolet Disinfection Guidance Manual (Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule).
In comparison to other validation protocols, such as DVGW or ÖNORM, which only test to a single UV dose set point of 40 mJ/cm², the US EPA UVDGM validation test method collects performance data at a wide range of UV dose set points. Importantly, this allows USEPA UVDGM UV Systems to provide a guaranteed, validated dose at any set point between 10 mJ/cm2 RED and 120 mJ/cm² RED. For drinking water operators, this provides a highly flexible UV system that can often reduce both CAPEX and OPEX costs by over 50%.
Shown in the above table, by adopting the US EPA UVDGM Validation, UV systems can be sized to provide the correct UV dose in relation to the specified UVT% and target micro-organism. In the case of UVT% values higher than 90% T10, the power savings are typically 50% less when using the US EPA UVDGM compared to the required operating power of DVGW and ÖNORM solutions, which can only offer 40 mJ/cm2 in all circumstances.
DFMA (Mobile and Offsite Fabrication)
The need for more efficient and innovative installation options is becoming a priority for both operators and M&E contractors throughout the UK and the rest of the world.
As a specialist supplier of bespoke packaged equipment, we have responded to the industry requirements for reducing time spent on site, simplifying installations, reducing costs and improving lead times by offering a range of standardised DFMA (Design, Fabricate, Manufacture & Assemble) solutions for drinking water industry.
Typical DFMA, offsite manufacture solutions from atg UV Technology include:
- Containerised, turn-key UV plants
- Skid mounted equipment and kiosk solutions
- Pre-fabricated assemblies for ‘drop in’ installations
As a leader in the UK municipal drinking water sector, the atg UV Technology package designs fully comply with the requirements of WIMES 801.B, the DWI 2010 UV Disinfection Guidelines and the validation requirements of the US EPA UVDGM (2006).
Emergency rental solutions
Designed to meet the requirements of the UK DWI’s (Drinking Water Inspectorate) Guidelines on the use of UV Disinfection for Potable Water Supplies, our design provides a range of self-contained, mobile and fully equipped drinking water plants that are suitable for both temporary use, and long term installations.
atg UV Technology can provide both standard ‘off-the-shelf’ UV systems that will accommodate temporary drinking water projects from 100 m3/hr to 1000 m³/hr, to more specialist and bespoke containerised UV plants, that have a primary disinfection capacity (40 mJ/cm² RED) of 2,000 m³/hr, offering water companies the ability to react quickly to sites currently not using UV disinfection when emergencies such as Cryptosporidium outbreaks occur.
As a leader in the UK municipal drinking water sector, our package designs fully comply with the requirements of WIMES 801.B and the DWI 2010 UV Disinfection Guidelines and include all the necessary equipment and design features such as required to operate a modern UV drinking water facility. Our typical packaged solution includes:

Water Reuse (NWRI)
Water reuse is becoming a significant requirement in water-stressed areas worldwide and has seen many municipal drinking water operators turn to the NWRI (National Water Research Institute) guidelines for wastewater reuse (2012) in order to ensure their drinking water plants can meet capacity.
By independently bio-assay testing UV system performance with live surrogate microorganisms at a vast range of UVT’s, the NWRI validation provides a detailed specification and guaranteed performance solution to treat effluent wastewater to a very high standard, allowing the water to be reused as drinking water. Often referred to as ‘Toilet-to-Tap’ or the ‘California Title 22 Standard’, the wastewater can effectively be re-injected to the head of a standard drinking water works without the need for any environmental barrier.
Advanced Oxidation (AOP)
Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) provides a solution for the treatment and removal of chemical contaminants, trace organics and micro pollutants from drinking water in order to meet the new EU Priority Substances Directive (2013/39/EC), a new ‘daughter directive’ of the widely established Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) that will affect all European member states.
The Priority Substances Directive, will require 45 micro-pollutants such as Hydrocarbons (PAH’s), Endocrine Disruptor Compounds (EDC’s) and trace pesticides and pharmaceuticals to be removed from both drinking water and wastewater discharges.
Advanced Oxidation is an established treatment technology for both drinking water and waste water. By formingHydroxyl Radicals (OH-) through reactions with an appropriate catalyst, Advanced Oxidation can be used to effectively break down many organic and chemical contaminants into their base components of CO² and H20.
Target Contaminants for Advanced Oxidation include:
- Poly-aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)
- BTEX Compounds (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylene)
- Tri-tert-butylphenol
- Poly-chlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)
- Endocrine Disruptor Compounds
- Alkylphenol (Octylphenols & Nonylphenol)
- Pentachlorophenol (PCP)
- Methoxychlor
- Trace Industrial Chemicals & Pesticides
- Trace Pharmaceuticals
Whilst an extremely reactive compound species, Hydroxyl Radicals (OH-) possess a very short life, and safely breakdown into H20 and O2 within micro-seconds of being generated, and therefore do not pose any health or environmental impacts.
