Inadequate disinfection and treatment of microorganisms such as SRB’s (Sulphate Reducing Bacteria), Acid Producing Bacteria and Slime Forming Bacteria in production water and stimulation fluids, used in the recovery of oil and gas has been proven to lead to a host of negative consequences, including; Souring the well with hydrogen sulphide gas H2S, Microbiological induced corrosion (MIC) and Plugging of the well (Iron Sulphide).
With increasingly strict regulations on chemical use in well injection applications, together with the rising costs of chemicals and health and safety concerns, there has been an increasing effort to reduce or eliminate chemicals and biocides from the process.
Working with Conoco Phillips, atg UV carried out the original research (1993) into the effectiveness of UV treatment for Sulphate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) reduction used in well injection applications, which led to the supply of a number of offshore UV treatment plants being installed in the Norwegian North Sea sector, with the largest plant – Eldfisk and Ekofisk treating 4,500 m3/hr and 4,000 m3/hr daily.
Since 1993, atg UV Technology has successfully used UV for the control of microorganisms such as SRB’s, Acid Producing Bacteria and Slime Forming Bacteria in oil and gas recovery well injection applications.
Through extensive R&D, field trials and joint industry research projects with leading oil & gas operators, we have developed a range of specialised, modular packaged solutions for the treatment and sterilisation of produced water before down-hole reinjection in order to maintain well integrity without the need for chemicals and biocides.
Produced water re-injection (PWRI) is increasingly being used by operators to gain value from returning injection waters and avoid the need for environmental discharge or disposal wells.
With total global volumes of re-injected produced water set to increase to over 340-bn barrels annually by 2020, operators are looking for advanced water treatment solutions that can both increase the quality of re-injected produced water, whilst reducing operation costs and simplifying operations.
Traditionally, large volumes of biocide such as Glutaraldehyde and THPS have been used to chemically dose Produced Water to control bacterial growth before reinjection, however the rising costs of chemicals, handling, and offshore storage concerns plus an appetite by operators to reduce the number of chemicals added to the process has seen operators turn to UV treatment as an alternative solution.
Working with a number of major oil and gas operators, atg UV has developed and field tested a range of modular, produced water treatment packages that utilise specially designed UV disinfection reactors to provide a minimum 99.99% reduction of microorganisms such as SRB’s (Sulphate Reducing Bacteria), Acid Producing Bacteria and Slime Forming Bacteria, that if left untreated, pose a range of negative consequences including:
- Souring the well with hydrogen sulphide gas H2S
- Microbiological induced corrosion
- Plugging of the well
By using UV treatment as a primary solution for reducing bacteria, operators can significantly reduce the required volumes of biocides from the process typically by 90%, only requiring a small residual to protect the pipework from re-contamination upstream of the UV package. In some cases, operators have been able to switch from aggressive biocides such as Glutaraldehyde to less hazardous options such as chlorine.
With the reduction in biocide use and the subsequent reduction in offshore transportation, handling, and storage, UV treatment offers a green, environmentally friendly solution that offers to significantly improve the operational costs of produced water treatment operations.
Using high intensity UV light and specially selected catalysts, atg UV Technology can offer a cost effective ‘Advanced Oxidation Process’ as a final polish technique used to breakdown and remove trace micro pollutants and organics such as BTEX’s, Phenols and PAH’s, allowing produced water to be safely and environmentally friendly discharged into the environment.
Over 70% of produced water worldwide returning from the well requires disposal. In order to discharge into the environment, oil and gas operators are required to treat produced water to a high standard, removing hydrocarbons, chemicals and other toxic compounds to protect the environment and meet environmental discharge requirements and regulations such as OSPAR and the Priority Substances Directive.
Advanced Oxidation is an established treatment technology for drinking water, wastewater and for ultra-pure water used in electronics manufacturing and power generation (boiler feed water). By forming Hydroxyl Radicals (OH-) through reactions with an appropriate catalyst, Advanced Oxidation is highly effective at breaking down organic and chemical contaminants into their base components of CO2 and H20.

Whilst an extremely reactive compound species, Hydroxyl Radicals (OH-) possess a very short life, and safely breakdown into H20 and O2 within micro-seconds of being generated, and therefore do not pose any environmental impact.
We are a leading provider of mobile, onsite water treatment packages for hydraulic fracturing and other onshore oil and gas recovery applications. atg UV Technology’s leading, environmentally friendly solution eliminates chemical biocides from the process, whilst onsite water reuse significantly reduces truck movements, lowers water consumption and waste disposal.
The process of Hydraulic Fracturing requires large volumes of clean, sterile water to be injected into the shale formation to release the gas trapped between the rocks. Typically, 20% to 70% of the injected water, together with formation water and other contaminants returns from the well in the form of flowback or produced water.
Large scale removal of this water poses significant problems for operators due to the high level of truck movements required to remove the flowback to an off-site facility and then deliver fresh water in its place. In addition the high costs associated with off-site wastewater treatment and disposal are also of significant concern, with typical disposal costs ranging from £11.00 to £19.00 per m3.
As regulations, planning authorities and politics continue to drive sensitivity over the use of chemicals, truck movements and fresh water use, investment in on-site water treatment solutions that allow flowback water to be recycled and reused for additional fracture stages and new wells have become a major priority for shale gas operators.
atg UV Technology has provided specialist ‘chemical-free’ UV treatment packages for the treatment and disinfection of flow back water before re-injection. Using a specially developed UV system purposely designed to treat flow back water, the atg UV Technology solution targets a range of micro-organisms including SRB’s (Sulphate Reducing Bacteria), Acid Producing Bacteria and Slime Forming Bacteria.
The use of UV disinfection as the primary sterilisation technique has allowed operators to eliminate the need for aggressive biocides such as Glutaraldehyde and THPS from the process. UV treatment has a high disinfection efficiency. Even with low UV doses, a single pass through a UV system (0.2 seconds exposure) will achieve a 5.0 log reduction (99.999%) of micro-organisms such as SRB’s (Sulphate Reducing Bacteria), Acid Producing Bacteria and Slime Forming Bacteria.
Benefits for Shale Gas Projects
- Eliminates the need for aggressive biocides – When used as the primary disinfection solution, UV eliminates the need for aggressive chemical biocides such as THPS, Glutaraldehyde & Formaldehyde.
- Removes the need for off-site flow-back disposal – As a mobile, on-site water treatment solution, flow-back water can be treated and stored for re-injection on future fracture stages. This eliminates the need for expensive off-site treatment.

- Use alternative water sources – When location allows it, using a mobile water treatment plant from atg UV Technology will allow operators to source water from local rivers, canals and coast lines.

UV treatment is now the disinfection technology of choice for offshore potable drinking water systems and provides a simple, ultra compact and easy to maintain solution that protects against all known bacteria and harmful microorganisms, including chlorine resistant microorganisms such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia.

Norwegian Sector – NiPH Approved Potable Drinking Water Packages

Blowout Preventers (BOP) units used during drilling operations are critical safety devices that rely on high quality, sterilise and particle free hydraulic fluid for reliable operation. As a leader in oil and gas water treatment, atg UV Technology has developed the world’s first UV treatment package to maintain and protect BOP operation fluids.
BOP’s are used to prevent the uncontrolled flow of liquids and gases during drilling operations. Typically, BOP’s are controlled and operated by hydraulic fluids comprised of:
- Potable grade fresh water
- Glycol based antifreeze
- Soluble lubricants with corrosion inhibitors
If left untreated, the levels of bacteria present in the BOP Controls fluid can quickly begin to rise. This growth is quickly accelerated by the sugars present in the glycol mixture. Bacterial growth is now a hot topic with operators, as even small amounts of biological activity can lead to a range of negative consequences including; microbial corrosion on the fluid lines, corrosion of the BOP and Control Unit components and seals and control system blockages caused by the formation of particles and solids in the fluid. These can lead to critical BOP failure and unrepairable damage of the Blow Out Preventer itself.
Working with a number of specialist subsea BOP controls specialists, atg UV has designed a unique treatment solution that combines UV treatment and filtration. Tare the only UV manufacturer in the world to offer a fully tested and field proven BOP control fluid UV treatment package, following the success of this original research, atg UV Technology has installed a number of fully operational, ATEX Zone 2, IIB, T3 certified UV treatment, filtration and pumping skid packages for the operators such as Transocean and Awilco Drilling.
The water used for pipeline flooding and hydro-testing testing has for some time been known as a potential source of microbial contamination, containing natural concentrations of SRB’s (Sulphate Reducing Bacteria), Acid Producing Bacteria and Planktonic Slime Forming Bacteria, that if left untreated, pose a range of negative consequences including:

- Production of highly hazardous hydrogen sulphide gas H2S
- Formation of biofilms and slime
- Formation of Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS)

UV disinfection: A highly effective solution for pipeline flooding water.
Traditionally, chemical biocides such as Glutaraldehyde and THPS have been used to prevent bacterial growth, however strict limitations on discharges to the environment of wastewater following completion, together with the high cost of chemical biocides have seen operators look for alternative water treatment solutions.
UV disinfection of fresh water, brackish water and seawater provides a highly effective, low cost alternative to chemical biocides for eliminating microorganisms and bacteria such as SRB’s. As a chemical-free technology, UV treatment has been successfully used in the field by leading operators on some of the worlds’ largest and most prestigious pipeline commissioning projects including the Nord Stream (Baltic Sea) and Castor (Caspian Sea) pipelines.
When using UV disinfection with a filtration package and food grade oxygen scavenger as the primary technique for controlling bacterial growth, operators have been able to fully eliminate the use of hazardous biocides from the process, significantly improving the environmental profile of the project and lowering operational costs.
UV disinfection is proven to prevent the build-up of biofilms and destroy mussel larvae and other microorganisms that can cause heat exchangers and cooling systems to blind and fail. In addition, UV disinfection is highly effective at reducing SRB’s to protect equipment from Microbial Induced Corrosion (MIC) and damage from H2S.
Water sources such as seawater, fresh water and brackish water used for cooling loops and heat exchangers carry a major risk of microbial contamination. Operating at increased temperatures that provide the optimum environment for growth, operators are required to treat and disinfect source water to protect their systems and piping networks from negative consequences such as mussel growth, biofilms, EPS layers and Microbial Induced Corrosion (MIC) caused by acid producing bacteria such as SRB’s.
Traditionally, chemical dosing with chlorine or electro chlorination have been used to protect the process, however strict limitations on discharges to the environment of wastewater, together with the high cost of transporting, storing and dosing chemicals have seen operators look for alternative, environmentally friendly water treatment solutions.
UV disinfection of fresh water, brackish water and seawater provides a highly effective, low cost alternative to chemical biocides for eliminating all known microorganisms, including acid producing bacteria such as SRB’s and chlorine resistant, biofilm forming bacteria such as Mycobacterium Avium and Mycobacterium Intracellulare.
When high doses of UV light at 254 nm as the primary technique for controlling bacterial growth, operators have been able to reduce the need for chlorination by of 90% from the process significantly improving the environmental profile, simplifying operations and lowering operational costs.

From drilling decks and accommodation platforms, to upstream refineries, many oil, gas and petrochemical installations now require equipment to be installed in hazardous areas and ATEX classified zones. Explosive atmospheres can be caused by any number of flammable gases, mists, vapours and combustible dusts.
