This report, Human Resources in the Canadian Environmental Sectors, is the result of a three-phase project entitled Environmental Sectors Data Development (ESDD) initiated by the Canadian Council for Human Resources in the Environment Industry (CCHREI) in collaboration with Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC). The first phase involved the identification and documentation of priority human resource issues. The second and third phases were the data collection phases, with Phase II involving a survey of the employers of environmental practitioners and Phase III, a series of focus groups.

The ESDD project was developed to update a previous human resource study published in 1993 by the federal government, Human Resources in the Environment Industry1 . The 1993 study, which specifically targeted companies that derived the majority of their revenue from the supply of environmental goods and services, estimated that the Canadian environment industry employed between 60,000 to 70,000 people.

The objective of the ESDD project was to obtain the critical information required for setting national human resource strategies that will ensure the prosperity of the Canadian environmental sectors.
