  • Modeling low impact development potential with hydrological response units

Evaluations of benefits of implementing low impact development (LID) stormwater management techniques can extend up to a watershed scale. This presents a challenge for representing them in watershed models, since they are typically orders of magnitude smaller in size. This paper presents an approach that is focused on trying to evaluate the benefits of implementing LIDs on a lot level. The ...

  • Characteristics of urban chemical spills in Southern Ontario

Thousands of chemical spills occur as a result of accidents or natural disasters each year worldwide and have the potential to harm human health and the environment. More than 700 recorded chemical spills involving more than 1,000 types of chemical occur every year in Southern Ontario, resulting in multiple environmental impacts. This paper presents characteristics of urban chemical spills ...

  • Occupational gender segregation in Slovenia: sustainable economy perspective

This paper aims to study occupational gender segregation in Slovenia as one of the indicators of social equity, which is one of the bottom lines of sustainable development, and to compare it to other EU countries. Females in Slovenia are still in an unfavourable position and the process towards a market economy has not solved the issue. The historical effects of declarative equality in Slovenia ...

  • Testing the sustainability of the Slovenian (PAYG) pension system using the Lee?Carter method

Assumptions about the future development of people?s longevity have a crucial impact on the long-term sustainability of the public pension system. The use of standard methods to estimate longevity has led to systematically underestimates of increase in longevity. We use the Lee?Carter (LC) model to forecast demographics projections for the Slovenian population which leads to results much closer ...

  • Levels of organochlorine pesticides residues in meat

Abstract: Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (Lindane, Aldrin, Dieldrin, Endosulfan, DDT and DDE) residues in beef samples from the Kumasi and Buoho abattoirs in Ghana were determined using gas chromatography. Organochlorine residues were found in all the samples. The average concentration of lindane in beef fat samples from Kumasi was 4.03 µg/kg and 1.79 µg/kg in beef fat from Buoho. ...

  • The "Tracer Potential" method of evaluating atmospheric models: main algorithms

In this paper, we describe the basic concepts and main algorithms of a method which uses tracer measurements to compare and evaluate wind fields as predicted by different atmospheric models or obtained from measurements. In particular, we focus on details of the trajectory calculation and the estimation of the relative and absolute successes of the wind fields. A cost function "Tracer ...

  • Fireworks air pollution in Slovenia

Over the 'Christmas–New Year' period 12/2010–01/2011, PM10 air pollution measurements on most of the automatic measuring stations in Slovenia reached extreme values of up to 300 µg/m³. Analysis shows a very close correlation with the timings of the fireworks displays in the areas. This paper shows the other side of this cultural enjoyment - the effect on PM10 air pollution. As the correlation ...

  • Simple and efficient ion imprinted polymer for recovery of uranium from environmental samples

Ion imprinted polymer material (IIP) was prepared by forming ternary complexes of uranyl imprint ion with 1-(prop-2-en-1-yl)-4-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)piperazine and methacrylic acid followed by thermal copolymerization with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linking monomer in the presence of 1,1′-azobis(cyclohexanecarbonitrile) initiator and 2-methoxy ethanol porogenic solvent. HCl ...
