A Feasibility Study on Active Disassembly Using Smart Materials-Preliminary Analysis of Plastics Dominated Products

0
Active disassembly using smart materials’ (ASDM) is a relatively new technology. Extensive tests have shown that the technology works. Analysis of product categories has indicated that within the plastics dominated products group lies the potential for significant gains from employing ASDM. In contrast, the application of other ‘end-of-life’ (EoL) scenarios (shredding and separation or manual disassembly) usually exhibit relatively high end-of-life costs and low recyclability quotes. This paper describes that from a cost perspective, active disassembly technology is likely to turn out as the preferred EoL technology to be applied to plastics dominated products.
