A High Performance Biofilter for Toluene Emission Control
A high performance biofilter was designed at the Université de Sherbrooke in Québec. This laboratory-scale biofilter was used for the treatment of gas streams polluted with toluene present in low or high concentration. A maximum elimination capacity of 135 g.m -3 .h -1 was achieved, and no clogging of the biofilter was observed during the experimental period. The performance of the cleaning system was enhanced substantially by utilizing adequate microbial species for toluene removal, high strength peat beads with a quick immobilization of microorganisms, and a continuous dropwise trickling system to supply a sufficient amount of nutrients to microorganisms.
