A lot of water has flown under the bridge

Indian mythology has it that a King had to undergo penance for an inordinately long period of time in order to please Mother Ganges so that she would flow and provide water to his subjects for irrigation and domestic use. The same Ganges flows even today, but then the tables have been turned. It seems as if the river Goddess now is turning back to the homo-sapiens inhabiting her banks, supplicating them to treat her with the same respect with which their ancestors had, hundreds of years ago.

Even as she wets and enlivens the northern plains, she is the receptacle for trash of all imaginable hues and types – from fecal matter to flowers to floating corpses.
