This paper presents a new categorisation method of resistivity instrument: Conventional arrays-oriented resistivity instruments (conventional instruments) vs. Comprehensive array-oriented resistivity instruments (comprehensive instruments). The conventional instruments were designed for conventional array data collections. The comprehensive instruments were designed for universal resistivity data collections without the limitations of conventional arrays. The comprehensive instruments are based on the inversion technique and multiple channel data collection method.
The main advantages of the comprehensive instruments are as long as the electrode is on a inversion grid, it can be put anywhere in the survey area (including underground), which subsequently helps users to solve a large number of exploration problems; it uses multiple channel technique (over ten channels) to collect more data and produce better inversion image than conventional instrument.
