A New Year and a New, Evolving Approach to Compliance
First and foremost, welcome to the New Year!
I know a lot of things have been changing in this old world we live in, but NERC Compliance is here to stay, and that’s what I want to talk about.
So in the spirit of the New Year, I’m making some resolutions about NERC compliance. Here they are!
Do something to make Evidence Management less difficult and confusing
This is something that simply has to change. I don’t think there is a company on planet Earth whose staff have memorized each and every requirement… including the specific measures for each. There may be a few people on staff that nail it, but it’s usually very few. Should we try to get everyone to that place? I don’t think that’s a reasonable or successful approach.
Then there is the challenge of keeping up with the different versions of the Standards and cross-mapping evidence to multiple Requirements. Too complicated. When a new Standard version hits the streets, it should be a simple matter to incorporate the new versions into the evidence management strategy. That’s something I hope to help deliver to the market very soon.
Get things under Control
Let’s face it, even with some pretty cool tools in our hands, most of us are still playing catch-up to the Standards and Requirements. There are a lot of reasons for that, some that can be addressed through specific solution functionality and others through a mindset change. The key word is Control.
Remember RAI and all that cool stuff about internal controls that has long been the primary way NERC identified for utilities to move towards an assurance compliance model rather than performance based? Yeah, me too, only I’ve worked out a way to approach NERC compliance in a controls-based approach that I think will dramatically simplify the entire process of being compliant, with a level of assurance and transparency I think many of us have given up on. So where’s the best place to start? CIP Low. I will be sharing more on how we can accomplish this in the very near future…
Be Disruptive
One of the things that gets in the way of progress, regardless of the industry or problem, is the “that’s the way we do it” mentality. We all fall prey to this, especially when we’ve looked for other ways to “do it” without finding any exciting answers. Unfortunately, that bakes bad process and bad habits into our way of life, so it’s really important to challenge the status-quo, think outside the box, and get real creative.
That’s exactly what I’m doing, and from that process things are starting to pop up that are very powerful ways of changing the game. Our end game is simple, make NERC Compliance easier and more successful for everyone. I think 2017 will bring to the surface some very powerful, new concepts.
Stay tuned for more, and feel free to drop me a line anytime if you’d like discuss some of the things I’m doing. We’re all in this together, so the more we work together, the better off we all are!
