ICI Australia Operations Pty Ltd (ICI) manufactures a wide range of bulk, specialty and consumer chemicals and plastics. ICIís Botany site is a highly integrated operation, comprising a chlor/alkali plant, surfactants plants, and ethylene plant with downstream polymer manufacturing facilities.
Among the polymer facilities are the Vinyls Plants. Here ethylene and chlorine are reacted together to make ethylene dichloride (EDC), which is thermally cracked to form vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). This is polymerised to produce polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
PVC manufacturing began at Botany in 1955 and the existing VCM plant was built in 1966.
