This paper summarizes the results of an anaerobic pilot study conducted on-site at the Eastman Chemical Company plant located in Sokolov, Czech Republic. One 800 L ADI-Hybrid pilot reactor was operated for 15 months from February 19, 2003 to May 23, 2004, treating selected petrochemical wastewater generated from the two Acrylic Monomers Plants (acrylic acid plants) on site. The principal objective of the study was to determine whether the Eastman Sokolov wastewater was amenable to anaerobic treatment in an ADI-Hybrid reactor and, if so, to refine full-scale design criteria. The study was successful; excellent organic removal (i.e., COD removal of 90 percent) was achieved at a steady-state average organic loading rate (OLR) of 5.5 kg COD/m3·d and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 5.7 d. Formaldehyde and acrylic acid inhibition were an important consideration in this study; however, with proper effluent recycle (i.e., recycle ratio of 110:1, recycle flow:influent flow), excellent removal of both known anaerobic inhibitors were achieved (> 99 percent removal) and no inhibition was observed.
