This book is an overview of the development of aerobic waste water treatment and influences which shaped this development.

The historical development of sewage treatment and the subsequent emergence of aerobic biological treatment methods is investigated from the early nineteenth century to the present day. In addition, the earlier historical background, up to the late 18th century, is summarised in chapter 1.

Chapters 2 and 3 examine the importance of water supply and the influence this had on the water closet and the water-carriage system resulting in the consequent discharge of sewage to rivers. The gradual realisation of the association between water-borne disease and sewage-polluted drinking water is explained.
