EMSL Analytical has been on the forefront of providing quick and affordable allergen testing solutions for industry and the public.

A recent study conducted at Otago University in New Zealand found that synthetic bedding typically contains greater numbers of fungal cell components than feather bedding. The research found that high levels of beta glucans, from fungi, were regularly found in synthetic bedding compared to what was found in natural feather bedding.

The research is important to the millions of people that suffer from asthma and allergies. Other studies have correlated synthetic bedding with higher levels of dust mites which are also a known allergy and asthma trigger.

The problem of allergens in the home is not just limited to bedding. Allergens from cockroaches, rodents, pet dander, pollen and additional sources of mold are also commonly found. All of these allergens can trigger asthmatic attacks and allergies and according to some reports, asthma affects up to 7% of the entire population.

Asthma attacks lead to an inflammation of the lungs and airways leading to difficulty in breathing and sometimes even death. Asthma in children has been reported to be on the rise in many industrialized countries across the globe.

EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s largest allergen testing laboratories, has extensive experience analyzing samples for known allergens. “Anyone who suffers from asthma or allergies should take note of this latest report,” reported Joe Frasca, Executive Vice President for EMSL Analytical. “There are simple tests that can be performed to make sure homes are not contaminated by these allergens and they can make a huge difference in the quality of life for people who live there,” Frasca continued.

EMSL’s network of nearly 40 laboratories in the United States and Canada has been providing quality analytical services since 1981.
