Analysis of EU15+1 PAHs in Soil by the AutoMate-Q40: An Automated QuEChERS Solution
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a large group of organic compounds found in the environment. PAHs are monitored by the US Environmental Protection Agency and European Union due to their carcinogenic characteristics. In recent global events, PAHs have been a concern ever since the late 1980’s.
QuEChERS is a Quick-Easy-Cheap-Effective-Rugged-Safe extraction method that has been developed for the determination of pesticide residues in agricultural commodities. Since its installment in 2003, QuEChERS has been adapted for use with many additional matrices and compound classes such as soil and PAHs. The aim of this study is to validate the extraction performance of the AutoMate-Q40 by monitoring PAHs extracted from soil. The target compounds were determined by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using selective ion monitoring (SIM).
