Application of partially submerged bioreactor landfill for leachate management in the tropics
Courtesy of Inderscience Publishers
This research investigated the effect of leachate recirculation and storage operation in tropical landfill. Four lysimeters were operated under conventional landfill operation, leachate re-circulation, leachate storage with re-circulation and internal storage modes. Organic waste degradation, leachate quantity and characteristics and well as methane gas from each lysimeter were compared. Leachate re-circulation and storage operation helped promoting organic waste biodegradation and stabilising organic substances in leachate yielding lower pollutant load. Water balance evaluated by Hydrologic Evaluation of Landfill Performance (HELP) model was in agreement with the experimental results. Field capacity and porosity of waste were decreased when compared with their initial value.
