ARA Thunersee Gemeindeverband - Case Study
Customer: ARA Thunersee Gemeindeverband - Sector: Wastewater Management - Country: Switzerland - Year of Cooperation: 2011 - Website: www.arathunersee.ch - Supplier: Endress & Hauser Messtechnik GmbH & Co KG - Microtronics Engineering GmbH - Installation & Operation: Imeth AG
The ARA Thunersee is a municipal wastewater treatment plant and treats the wastewater of 38 communities in the area around the city of Thun. The local industry included, the ARA Thunersee serves approximately 150 000 inhabitants. The wastewater treatment plant got into operation in 1972. Since then the plant was continuously extended. The plant impresses with a high treatment performance level, low operating costs, and extraordinary good energy values.
The ARA Thunersee is one of Switzerland's most modern wastewater treatment plants. The existing measuring points in the sewer system (whose maintenance is not part of the ARA's tasks) weren't up to date any longer and had to be replaced. To be able to distribute the operating costs of the ARA Thunersee among the different communities, the data of the more than 40 new installed measuring points which register the respective dry weather amount should be transmitted wirelessly to a central server and thus enable remote access as well as permanent analysis of the collected data.
At more than 40 measuring points the flow rate is calculated using the storage level above a Venturi necking. The storage level, the calculated flow rate, the added daily amount as well as information concerning the measuring points' maintenance are registered by Microtronics. With myDatalog the collected data is transmitted to the central server on the ARA Thunersee via GPRS. This enables the ARA Thunersee's staff remote access to the measuring points' data at any time. The project's realization as well as the installation of the remote access solution was done by the Swiss Imeth AG, which is also responsible for its maintenance.
Due to the cooperation with Microtronics the ARA Thunersee could generate the following advantages:
- Permanent access to the measuring points' data
- Permanent monitoring of the measuring points' data
- Resource savings since staff doesn't have to collect data on site
The Microtronics Product
For the project 'ARA Thunersee' an M2M solution by Microtronics was used. It comprises myDatalog as transmitting device, Managed Service as GSM communication service and the server licence myDatanet.
The Cooperation with Microtronics
'The decisive factor for us to choose the solution from Microtronics clearly was the cost effectiveness. We had great expectations concerning the new system which were eventually all met. We are really satisfied.' (Hanspeter Reist, Head of Projects & Process Management, ARA Thunersee).
