Summary: Arrowhead Sewer Company, Inc. hired Princeton Hydro, LLC to provide engineering services to reinstall an inflow Equalization Tank that floated due to unforeseen groundwater conditions. Given site and layout restrictions, Princeton Hydro designed groundwater and overland flow control elements to buffer the tank from groundwater uplift. The system consisted of two main parts: a diversion channel to direct the overland flow around the tank area, and a subsurface drainage system around the tank. The drainage system consisted of Invisible Structure’s Rainstore3, surrounding the tank with a curtain composed of 94 percent voids, and Draincore2 under the tank, both capturing and conveying water to a 30” outlet pipe. Princeton Hydro also designed an anchor system to fasten the EQ tank to the existing concrete pad.
Rainstore3 cells are placed in the excavated area. Princeton Hydro, LLC used varying heights of cells – see image schematic below.
Evaluation of Tire Derived Rubber Particles for Biofiltration Media
ABSTRACTCurrently, on average, one tire is discarded in the U.S. for every man woman and child every year. While the reuse market for used tires has increased over the years to approximately 75%, there are still an estimated 2-3 billion used tires stockpiled in the U.S. Finding economical and sustainable end uses for this tire material is an ongoing challenge to environmental engineers and others. In this study, three different uses of tire rubber were evaluated as biofilm attachment media in bioreactors for...
State Fish Hatcheries and Invasive Species Don’t Mix
INTRODUCTION The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is responsible for the protection and management of the state’s fish populations. Cultured fish are stocked in natural and manmade areas that are excellent for growth and survival but have little or no spawning habitat. Other stocking areas include natural water bodies where spawning and nursery habitats have been destroyed or isolated from growth habitats by structures such as dams. But perhaps the most visible role of cultured fish is to provide recreationa...
Rainfall, Runoff and Infiltration Re-visited
Introduction The flow variations in sewers have been modelled for several years with a comparatively high degree of accuracy as far as the diurnal variations and responses to climatic conditions are concerned. However, until comparatively recently the variations in flow due to fluctuations in groundwater levels, soil storage capacity and wetness of the catchment have only been modelled in basic terms. For the past decade it has been possible to use runoff models that respond to the increasing wetness of the...
Modelling Sustainable Urban Drainage Structures
Introduction “Sustainable Development” is an increasingly important concept in most industries today, and one in which the water industry has been making rapid progress for over a decade. In countries around the world, including the USA, Europe, and Australia, Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUD) structures - permeable pavements, ponds, and the like - are reducing the volumes of direct urban runoff, and helping to resolve problems such as flooding and pollutant spills to rivers. However, until recently, waste...
Evaluation of Ecological Risks Associated with the use of Chlorine Dioxide for the Bleaching of ...
1.1 Scope and Objectives A small number of viable options are presently available for the bleaching of wood pulp (delignification and brightening) during the manufacture of pulp and paper. The use of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) in the bleaching process has largely superceded the earlier use of Cl2, or elemental chlorine, in the majority of North American pulp mills: It was discovered over a decade ago that the previous widespread use of Cl2 contributed to the production and subsequent release to the environment of...
Integration of Subsurface Data Management and GIS to Facilitate Model Calibration
Abstract The development of numerical codes, as well as pre- and post-processors to support these codes, has made the discipline of groundwater modelling increasingly more automated and efficient. The value of such modelling is reliant on the site-specific data used to build and calibrate the models. The integration of EarthSoft`s EQuISÒ Geology and any of several popular modelling environments results in a data management and analysis system that is more complete than the modelling system alone. Water level...
The Application of Ultra-Low Pressure Reverse-Osmosis Membrane for Water Treatment and Wastewater ...
Abstract The membrane technology has received more interests in recent years because of the stringent standards for water supply and effluent discharge. The advance of membrane technology and the reduction of its costs also make it not only a possible but also a reliable and safe as well as economically justified choice for water supply and wastewater reuse. In this study a new released ultra-low pressure reverse osmosis membrane ES20 from Nitto-Denko was used for the purification of lake water and secondary...
An Innovative Way to Recycle Cars
Abstract The aim of this paper is to present developments in the field of recycling of Out-of-Use-Vehicles (OUVs) that have taken place over the past five years. We will also suggest possible improvements based on solid experimental results obtained by INDRA and its network. Context The DG XI has designated France as the European monitor responsible for finding solutions for the recycling of OUVs. In the framework of a text adopted on 10th March 1993, France outlined its general policy for the treatment of...
Composting Food Residuals on the Farm
A county agency and a farmer in Vermont have teamed up to collect and compost food residuals and other organics. The Rutland County Solid Waste District (RCSWD), which is responsible for managing MSW for 16 cities and towns, began planning the food residuals composting program in December, 1996 with the Rutland Natural Resource Conservation District, one of 14 districts in Vermont that promotes agriculture, water quality and economic development. The conservation district canvassed area farms to determine which...
Choosing an Oil Skimmer for the Machine Shop
Advantages of Using an Oil Skimmer: The use of an oil skimmer in the machine shop setting holds many benefits. Removing the oil from a machine coolant tank will initiate some esthetic benefits such as cutting down on the amount of smoke generated from the cutting tool coming into contact with oil laden coolant. When a machine is shut down for the weekend, oil has a chance to come to the surface of the coolant tank. Bacteria that are living in the coolant tank use up the dissolved oxygen in the coolant mix,...
A new Technology for Composting: Suction Aeration for Opening Composting Works
Cost-efficient solution for smell emission reduction The enormous waste quantities that are produced day by day are one of the most difficult problems for the economy as such, for cities and communities and for private households. Storage capacities for waste are scarce everywhere. Therefore solutions of all kinds that reduce waste quantities or recycle waste materials to be reused in the material cycle are top priority for all concerned. For some time now, compost production has been a widely used approach to...
Minimizing Festival Trash
The Whole Earth Festival at the University of California-Davis is a student-organized event that takes place annually in early May. The weekend attendance is approximately 30,000 people, with 16 food vendors and 100-plus craft booths. One major emphasis of the festival is environmental sustainability. To minimize waste generation, an integrated solid waste prevention strategy was conceptualized and implemented. The components were to: Exclude all materials from the system that were not easily biodegradable,...
Reduction in Water, Energy, Raw Materials and Waste: Queensland Electroplating
Background Queensland Electroplating Pty Ltd (QE) is a small electroplating factory specialising in the tin plating of bus bars for electric transformers. Small quantities of plating of other metals, such as gold and silver, are also carried out, but because of the toxic heavy metals involved, no chrome plating is done. QE is a company owned and run by an environmentally caring family. In an industry that is highly competitive, they recognise that any wastage which causes pollution can also detract from their...
Petroleum Refining Industry - Pollution Prevention Guidelines
Introduction Pollution Prevention Guidelines to provide technical advice and guidance to staff and consultants involved in pollution-related projects. The guidelines represent state-of-the-art thinking on how to reduce pollution emissions from the production process. In many cases, the guidelines provide numerical targets for reducing pollution, as well as maximum emissions levels that are normally achievable through a combination of cleaner production and end-of-pipe treatment. Containment for Soil, Sediment, and Sludge
Containment treatments are often performed to prevent, or significantly reduce, the migration of contaminants in soils or ground water. Containment is necessary whenever contaminated materials are to be buried or left in place at a site. In general, containment is performed when extensive subsurface contamination at a site precludes excavation and removal of wastes because of potential hazards, unrealistic cost, or lack of adequate treatment technologies. Containment treatments offer quick installation times and...
Sydney´s Sustainable House
Introduction Sustainability or `sustainable development` has become a term which is frequently applied to land use and social planning and resource issues. Sustainability is a concept which draws attention to development practices which can degrade natural ecosystems and deplete natural resources. If development is defined broadly to include any cultural activity, then sustainable development may be defined as any practice that meets the needs of the present population without compromising the ability of future...
Ozone Brings Better Bottled Water
The proliferation of bottled beverages worldwide and an increased awareness of consumer health issues have beverage bottlers rethinking how to keep their liquids safe for consumption. One problem they face is the need to deliver a product that is free of bacteria, to provide extended shelf life and product quality. Ozone has quickly become the disinfectant of choice among water bottlers worldwide. Although ozone was `discovered` in the mid-19th century, it is only during the last several decades that its...
Improvement of Electrodeposition Paint Processes with Reverse Osmosis
Abstract For over 15 years, membrane separation processes have been very effectively utilized as essential components of electrodeposition (ED) paint processes. ED is the accepted method of applying the undercoat paint layer to new automobiles and appliances. As cross-flow membrane and ED paint technologies mature, new applications combining the two have been developed. A major American automobile manufacturer now uses reverse osmosis (RO) to treat ultrafiltration (UF) permeate generated by an ED paint process,...
Skimming Oily Wastewater
As large generators of oily wastewater tighten effluent controls, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is targeting smaller generators. Some of the firms receiving their attention are smaller manufacturing plants, automotive garages, mobile equipment service shops and truck farms. Many of these firms do not have access to a sanitary sewer system that will accept oily wastewater. Because disposal in storm sewers also is prohibited, they frequently use injection wells, septic system drainfields, dry wells...
Horizontal Wells - Technology Overview
Horizontal well technology has been incorporated into many current environmental remediation applications (and associated contaminants), such as in situ bioremediation, air sparging, vacuum extraction, soil flushing, free product recovery, etc. Ac cording to information reviewed, this technology is most applicable to sites with relatively shallow soil and/or groundwater contamination, and can potentially enhance remediation efforts at sites low hydraulic conductivities. Types of horizontal wells include both...
