Problem

Founded in 1937, this dairy cooperative located in Asia has played a leading role in the development of the industry in its country. Its mission is to 'supply quality products for safe-guarding the nation’s health' in all its product line. The same attention to quality standards that drives the dairy’s objectives is also directed to the environmental and wastewater treatment system. When the dairy decided to add more aeration equipment to one of its plants, it searched for the best technology available.

Solution

The dairy collects approximately 450 metric tons of raw milk each day from member dairy farms. During the production process, the raw milk generates a wastewater flow of 1300 metric tons a day. The dairy chose Aeration Industries Int’l., Inc.’s AIRE-O2® aspirator aerators to treat the 1200 mg/l influent BOD (biological oxygen demand) wastewater. A total of 16 x 7.5 hp (5.5 kW) and two x 30 hp (22 kW) aerators were installed in varying numbers in each of three aerated basins.

Results

Treatment improved resulting in an effluent discharge of 20 mg/l or a 98.5 percent removal rate. That is significantly lower than the required 50 mg/l. The dairy had chosen AIRE-O2® aerators due to its advanced technology and low energy usage. The government encourages energy conservation. The dairy’s staff has been very pleased with the aerator’s performance. 'The AIRE-O2® system has excellent oxygen transfer, easy maintenance and operation,' reports the dairy’s plant manager. The aerator’s horizontal flow pattern creates a 'flow linkage' between units that increases oxygen transfer and basin circulation, keeping the dairy solids in suspension for treatment. This dairy has taken the lead and serves as an example in insuring quality water resources!
