Under the Middle Chattahoochee Watershed Plan, the Columbus Water Work’s adaptive TMDL Implementation Planning strategy utilizes comprehensive watershed modeling and implementation of innovative non-point source BMPs to address TMDLs and protect beneficial uses of two waterways in Columbus, GA. Calibrated BASINS modeling is used to demonstrate compliance with bacteria standards for waters listed as impaired based upon limited grab sampling data. BMP technologies that utilize existing drainage way infrastructure and hydraulics are implemented to reduce public health concerns in the City’s premier park. The BMP, which includes flow attenuation, removal of flushed pollutants by high rate filtration and UV disinfection is expected to improve aquatic biology and reduce downstream erosion from a predominantly impervious area watershed.
