Bank restoration industrial terrain - case study

TenCate Geotube technology has played an important role in revitalizing the Mars, a 200 ha industrial terrain in Zutphen. By applying this technology, contaminated sludge has been safely stored and banks repaired.

One component concerns increasing the accessibility of the business terrain for lorries and shipping. In this regard it was necessary to dredge the industrial harbour and the 400-metre-long entry channel from the River IJssel, as well as repair the crumbling northern bank along the channel. By using TenCate Geotube technology (in combination with polymer technology), a good part of the sludge could be safely stored and then processed into the bank.

TenCate Geotube units filled with contaminated sludge and dewatered (filtered), serve as ‘building blocks’ for the bank under repair. There’s no question of environmental load and in addition savings are made in building materials, which otherwise would have had to be transported from elsewhere. The rest of the sludge could be used to turn a former eroded well into a nature-friendly’ bank.
