Biotechnological Production of 2,3-Butaneidol From Agroindustrial Food Wastes

As a part of a research program on the exploitation of common agroindustrial wastes to obtain products of high added value by microbial processes, this study investigates 2,3-butanediol production by Enterobacter aerogenes in a stirred batch reactor under micro-aerobic conditions. After the optimal operating conditions have been selected (pH, temperature, starting sugar concentration) using a glucose solution as a substrate, fermentation was carried out on three agroindustrial wastes: cheese whey, sugar-beet molasses and starch hydrolysate. The percentage of molar yield for sugar bioconversion in 2,3-butanediol (76% from starch hydrolisate, 56% from molasses, and 85% from cheese whey) show the possibilities of producing large amount of glycol and reducing the environmental impacts of these biodegraded wastes.
