In wastewater treatment plants, the biological nitrogen removal (BNR) has acquired critical importance, which makes that in the majority of the cases the overall process control largely depends on the control of this treatment. The normal aerobic process of nitrification is performed by specific aerobic living microorganisms and a lack of information on their bioactivity may be cause of confusion in terms of control and monitoring criteria. For this reason, the application of the BM Respirometry, for the goal of getting a determined performance within the frame of energy optimization, has achieved an important role for essential information about the actual nitrification situation but also in other situations under different conditions for the process development.
Abstract
Environmental factors control the rate of nitrification. For a determined substrate concentration, the most significant environmental factors are temperature, pH and oxygen availability. The well known critical influence of those factors on the nitrification are here analyzed by making use of a specific software and advanced respirometry based on a dynamic LFS system, where the test conditions can be set in the corresponding test-settings board and their levels modified throughout the test performance....

The well known critical influence of those factors on the nitrification are here analyzed by making use of a specific software and advanced respirometry based on a dynamic LFS system, where the test conditions can be set in the corresponding test-settings board and their levels modified throughout the test performance. In this way, it is possible to get and asses the trajectory of the...
Vinasse has been used as fertilizer by sugarcane growers, due to its potential to completely replace mineral fertilizers. However, if the application is not adequate, this practice may cause environmental contamination. This study used a respirometry test to evaluate the organic matter (OM) decomposition present in natural vinasse and concentrated vinasse (CV), with or without urea addition. The experiment involved two soil types and two types of vinasse at different application rates. The vinasse chemical...
The temporal and geographic attributes of the Deepwater Horizon incident in 2010 likely exposed pelagic game fish species, such as mahi‐mahi, to crude oil. Although much of the research assessing the effects of the spill has focused on early life stages of fish, studies examining whole‐animal physiological responses of adult marine fish species are lacking. Using swim chamber respirometry, the present study demonstrates that acute exposure to a sublethal concentration of the water accommodated fraction of Deepwater...
The main impact that the industrial fat, oil and grease (FOG) could make in a municipal wastewater treatment plant is mainly coming from its slowly biodegradable COD (sbCOD) The wastewater entering in a municipal WWTP tends to include a percentage of slowly biodegradable COD in the range of 35 to 65% of the total COD; but when this percentage surpasses the habitual range, normally it is due to the presence of any industrial waste that can adversely affect the process and which is usually called recalcitrant COD....
