Bypass filtration in open circulating cooling water systems
An open circulating cooling system is a method to remove process heat and is applied frequently for industrial purposes. In these systems heat is removed by evaporation of water to the surpassing air in the cooling tower. However there are some environmental disadvantages such as addition of chemicals to prevent the cooling water system from microbial growth and corrosion. The application of bypass filtration by means of continuous sand filtration may lead to reductions in the use of biocides in cooling water systems. The application of bypass filtration at DOW Benelux has led to a minimization of the environmental burden and to maximization of the reliability of the cooling water system.
