Case study - Goodyear streamlines SDS management to advance safety and reduce costs

Established in 1898, The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company is one the world’s largest producer of tires, hoses, belts and chemical and synthetic rubber. Goodyear has more than 80 manufacturing facilities in 28 countries. In addition to manufacturing, the company has more than 2,000 retail outlets allowing for global market penetration.

As an industry leader, Goodyear employs more than 98,000 associates, worldwide. Centralized hazard communication is critical to employee and customer safety. The most common element of Goodyear’s hazard communication program is Safety Data Sheets (SDS). In total, 75 percent of the company needed immediate access to more than 30,000 internal and vendor SDS.


The management of SDS at Goodyear was generally decentralized. Depending on the facility, each one had its own method of management which created numerous inefficiencies.

  1. It took anywhere from one to four employees to manage SDS at a given facility.
  2. There were redundancies in managing the SDS at a facility.
  3. It was difficult to keep track of the most up-to-date SDS
  4. Assuring global compliance was very time consuming.

Goodyear required an SDS management solution that would:

  • Consolidate all SDS to one central database
  • Provide a web viewer that can be accessed by all Goodyear facilities
  • 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year
  • Allow for easy updates to SDS
  • Catalog SDS with specific indexes to allow for expanded queries


To advance compliance, Goodyear began the search for a universal solution to its SDS management requirements. In total, Goodyear looked at more than 100 possible solution providers. The company hired an industry consultant to narrow down the list to five vendors. In the span of three months, Goodyear thoroughly interviewed each vendor. Goodyear’s decision criteria was based on industry and client experience, domain expertise, software functionality and the ability to meet its global requirement. UL The Wercs provided Goodyear with DocuWERCS, an outsourced document management solution. UL The Wercs created a centralized repository for all SDS at Goodyear’s corporate facility. The original inbound SDS were scanned, indexed, annotated and published to the web in a uniform and consistent fashion with customized cover sheets. Documents were able to be retrieved and distributed via a customized web viewer with password protected access. This allowed Goodyear to increase efficiency of human resources and strengthen data integrity across multiple locations. With this new implementation Goodyear was able to manage formulations and chemicals.

Today, DocuWERCS serves as a critical component to the global hazard communication program at Goodyear. Each global facility is now assured the most updated SDS. DocuWERCS also functions as the foundation of Goodyear’s corporate chemical tracking system


DocuWERCS allowed each Goodyear facility quick and easy access to all of the 30,000 SDS. DocuWERCS enabled Goodyear the ability to tie-together disjointed SDS from different vendors into one consistent look, advancing their compliance and reducing their cost
