The Problem

Narrabeen is a beachside suburb in northern Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia.  It is located 23 kms north-east of the Sydney central business district and is part of the Northern Beaches region.

This private residence was being built on the edge of the lagoon and as the developer went through the process of applying for planning permission, the existence of its underground garage attracted the attention of the planning authorities.  They refused to grant permission until a guarantee could be given that the garage area could be protected by a flood defence system what could be deployed within one minute of an imminent flood warning.

The Solution

A Self Closing Flood Barrier provided the solution and a 3m x 1.5m barrier was installed at the entrance of the garage.  As a passive system this is designed to deploy ahead of rising flood water and as such it more than comfortably met the stringent conditions of the planning authorities.
