STP Odour Monitoring in Palava - Case Study
Palava city aims to strategize smart waste management system. The city aims to reuse its waste – be it solid waste or wastewater. To achieve this objective, used water from all the households is treated in the STP, to reduce its harmful effects before being released into the open environment. The Palava City Management Association (PCMA) noticed that a few residents were experiencing odour problems in their area due to the foul stench. The authorities, therefore, needed to address the problem and track the root cause of the odour emission. But wind speed and its flow direction was a hindrance to identify the source of the odour.
After a detailed site survey, Oizom experts spotted odourful gases and particulate matters from the sewage treatment plant to be the cause of the problem. Thus, Oizom proposed to install Odosense – an Odour Monitoring solution. Oizom installed Odosense at strategic locations at the site to measure CO, SO2, NO2, H2S, NH3, CH4, VOC, and CH2O. Odosense is the most advanced e-nose designed particularly to monitor odourful components emerging from waste treatment plants, landfills, dumpyards, etc. Odosense monitored the environmental parameters in real-time. The emission hot-spot was traced back using reverse modelling. Oizom Terminal was set up for the PCMA admins to view the data. The cloud-based application helped to visualize the hourly/monthly Odour Index.
